William Charles “Captain Bill” Neitzey

August 4, 1940- June 4, 2021

William Charles “Captain Bill” Neitzey, 80, of Lothian, MD passed away June 4, 2021 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was born August 4, 1940 in Alexandria, VA to Melvin and Eileen Mannix Neitzey.

In 1959, Captain Bill graduated from the first graduating class at Groveton High School in Alexandria, Virginia.  He served in the Army’s First Armored Division at Ft. Hood Texas, from 1963 to 1965, as a driver of 5-ton wreckers, tanks, and personnel carriers, and maintained this equipment.   After serving in the Army, he worked at Burgundy Texaco in Alexandria Virginia.  He later bought the station and owned it for many years.  However, his true love was the water.

Captain Bill comes from a long line of waterman, including his great grandfather who worked on the Potomac River.  His great grandfather operated the largest fishing net in the world and received a gold medal at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893.  Captain Bill became a waterman in 1978, with his father in Deale, Maryland.  After crabbing and eeling for over 41 years, he reluctantly had to give up what he loved due to medical issues.

Those who knew Captain Bill knew he had a quick wit and loved to joke.  He had several clever sayings that always got a chuckle.  If you asked him what he needed, he would usually say a bushel basket full of hundred dollar bills.  He enjoyed eating and when you would ask him how it was, he would say “It’s the best you ever made.”  If you told him you liked something he was wearing, he would usually say, “You should, you gave it to me.”  When talking with his family, he always closed the conversation with “10-4” and expected them to answer “Out the back door.”

So to you Captain Bill, we say “Well done” and “10-4”.

He was preceded in death by a daughter April Neitzey.

Captain Bill is survived by his wife Margaret Elizabeth Neitzey of Lothian; Daughter Kelly Neitzey of Annandale, VA; Stepchildren Lynn Schaeffer and spouse Kenny Wilde, Teresa Jackson and spouse Chuck of Shady Side, MD, Pam Brown of Dunkirk, MD, Matthew Burke and spouse Sharon Maas of Jacksonville, FL and Anthony Clatterbuck of Annapolis, MD; Sisters Jacqueline Southerland of Southport NC, Mildred Gallahan and spouse Michael of Alexandria, VA and Alice Neitzey of Bolivia, NC. Captain Bill is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Captain Bill, My Sister, Marie and I missed hearing your jokes at the Marina fuel dock. You made us laugh every time. You showed your love of the water by bringing in large crabs for everyone. Selling your catch to Tylers in Chesapeake beach. You were a kind man that everyone loved. Now God has the best Waterman from Deale in Heaven. 10-4 Good Buddy. Hugs to your wonderful wife Margaret. Sincerely, Jeanette “JJ” Huckleby in Conway, SC and Marie White in Florida.
