Millard Filmore “Sonny” Garland, Jr.

Millard Filmore “Sonny” Garland, Jr., 81, of Lusby, MD passed away on July 23, 2021 at the Calvert Health Medical Center. Born August 29, 1939 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Millard Filmore Garland, Sr. and Dorothy (Frank) Garland.
Sonny graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1957 and served in the U.S. Army from 1967 until 1969. He was a Retail Store Manager for A&P/Superfresh for forty years, retiring in 1996. Sonny enjoyed gardening and horse racing, and was a Washington Redskins and Nationals fan.
Sonny is survived by his children, Millard “Mil” Garland (Dawn) of Lexington Park, MD, James “Jimmy” Garland of Mechanicsville, MD and Christopher “Chris” Garland of Waldorf, MD; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his brother, Owen “Chico” Garland (Wanda) of Keymar, MD. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Garland.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge #2092, 45779 Fire Department Lane, California, MD 20619. Please join us in casual attire.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the ASPCA or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Phyllis and I always looked forward to the times we shared. Quiet and reserved but talkative about sports and grandchildren. Will miss him and his kindness.

Sonny Lived 2 houses away when i was growing up he protected the younger kids and included us in a lot of sports.
I remember him as a great person and he will be missed
