Where Heritage and Life are celebrated.

Martha Ellen (Fisher) Clarke

June 18, 1938- June 15, 2021

Martha Ellen (Fisher) Clarke, almost 83, of Lusby, MD passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 with her loving husband of 65 years by her side.

Martha was born outside of Boston, MA on June 18, 1938 to Cecil Arnot Victor and Millicent (Mayhew) Fisher. She grew up in Brighton, MA and graduated from Brighton High (aka Castle on the Hill) in 1956. She married her forever love, Hugh W “Bill” Clarke, on October 21, 1956 in Newton, MA. They moved to Maryland soon after and started a family. They raised five children, including a very special granddaughter.

In high school, Martha’s goal was to become a nurse but God had a different plan for her. She truly enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. Taking care of others became her life’s work. She held several jobs over the years but she spoke the most about running her own home daycare as well as being a cook and Girl Friday for former Calvert County Commissioner, H. Gordon Trueman.

Martha had a lifelong love of learning. She truly enjoyed sharing her stories and wisdom with others. There was always at least one pet in her life. Animals, in general, meant the world to her. In nature, she loved hummingbirds. On a cross-country trip of a lifetime, she got to enjoy what makes our states unique. She loved to travel to see and experience new things. Reading, listening to music or gardening were her favorite things to do at home.

Taking care of her loved ones was always a priority. She wasn’t happy unless she had done everything she could to make others happy. Her top priority was to always make sure her husband, Bill, had what he needed to be successful. Even if it was to tease him to make him laugh. There was always a twinkle in her eye and grin on her face. When she was around, you couldn’t help but feel loved.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Hugh W “Bill”, Sr.; special granddaughter, Sue-Ellen Simitian (Marc) of Baltimore; daughter, Terresa “Terry” Clarke (Charlie) of Lusby; son, Hugh W “Bill” Clarke, Jr (Marla) of Lexington Park; Thomas “Tom” Clarke (Kim) of Lusby; and Patricia “Patty” Gallati (Peter) of Utah. She is also survived by her sister, Marjory Browning (John “Sonny”) of Lusby as well as her grandchildren, Nick, Chris and James McCormick; Adam and Amanda Clarke; Melissa and Eric Wilson; Katie and Krista Kemp; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Richard Fisher and her sister, Barbara Estey.

A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Olivet United Methodist Church, 13575 Olivet Road, Lusby, MD 20657. Interment will be at Southern Memorial Gardens, Dunkirk, MD at a later date.
