Leo Nelson Nims, Jr.

December 14, 1936- November 30, 2022

Leo Nelson Nims, Jr., 85, of Huntingtown passed away November 30, 2022. He was born December 14, 1936 in Annapolis to Leo Nelson and Edna Mildred Katherine (Phipps) Nims. Leo was raised in Anne Arundel County and graduated from Annapolis High School. He married Virginia Peacock in 1956 and they lived in Selby on the Bay in Edgewater, before moving to Calvert County in 1968 where they raised their six children. He was employed as an electrician before joining the police academy and becoming a MD State Police Officer, retiring as Sergeant. He then worked at Prince Frederick Motors as a salesman and ended his career with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Department, where he oversaw the crime lab for sixteen years. Leo married Sandra Kay Buckler in 1983 and welcomed her two boys in as his own. Leo loved fishing and traveling to Canda and Maine twice a year with friends, a trip they took for many years. He had many interests including hunting, woodworking, cooking and baking, was an avid birdwatcher and enjoyed feeding squirrels, and watching nature and travel shows. He also enjoyed reading crime stories, watching his favorite show, Hee Haw and listening to country music, especially Charlie Pride, Reba McIntyre, Statler Brothers and Conway Twitty. Most of all, Leo loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Kay Nims. He is survived by children Sally Simpson and husband Steve of Millersville, Cathy Thompson and husband David of Chesapeake Beach, Leo Nelson Nims III and wife Mary of Chesapeake Beach, Laura Annan and husband Buddy of Lusby, Robert Nims and wife Leslie of Parowan, UT, Eileen Hudson and husband John of Prince Frederick, Craig Bowen and wife Natalie of Huntingtown and Scott Bowen and wife Mandy of Huntingtown. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, brother Charles Nims of Tennessee and four nephews.

Leo arranged my first police ride-along when I was 16 years old. If not for his help and guidance I would have had a much tougher journey becoming a Md. State Trooper. He was a good police officer and a better friend.

To the Nims family. Prayers for peace and comfort at this time. I’m so sorry for your loss. I worked at Calvert Bank and remember “Trooper Nims” (at the time). He was there when we were robbed back in the early 70’s. I also worked with Cathy later on at the bank. May God be with you all.
