Where Heritage and Life are celebrated.

William A. “Bill” Norris

June 5, 1942- December 9, 2020

William (Bill) Alexander Norris passed away on December 9, 2020 at the age of 78, in his hometown of St. Mary’s County, Maryland from complications of COVID-19. Born on June 5, 1942, he was the son of the late James and Gertrude Norris who raised him and his 7 siblings on a 100-acre tobacco farm in Hollywood, MD.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Bill served on the Prince George’s County Police Department until he retired as a lieutenant in 1992. His hobbies were hunting, crabbing, sporting clay shooting and napping! He was a humble, gentle, and honorable man that listened more than he spoke. William Shakespeare wrote “Men of few words are the best men,” and that was true in his case.

Bill is survived by his wife Jeanne Ferguson Norris whom he married in 1995; siblings Ann Sweeney, Ray Norris, David Norris, Michael Norris, Ronald Norris, and Teddy Norris; his children Hollie Brogunier and husband Carl, and Chris Norris; stepchildren Donny Ferguson, Jan Peregoy, and Shelley Ferguson; grandchildren Nathan Brogunier, Allyson Brogunier, Lyndsey Stephens, and Derek Ferguson; great-grandchild Jolene Stephens. Bill was preceded in death by a brother Patrick Norris.

Bill will be remembered for his love of the water, dad jokes, the silly little jigs he would only do for his kids and grandkids, and the feeling that you were always safe and protected in his presence.

No immediate services will be held due to COVID-19. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.

Uncle Bill I remember the days when we hung tobacco in the barn together. In the middle of swampy August humidity, I never heard you complain. I remember how you looked at grandad with love and respect. You didn’t have to say it, you showed it. Maybe towards the end of life there were things you wanted to say or wished you had said, but you did the most important thing, you gave your love as best you knew how and let your actions speak. It’s been a blessing to have you as my Uncle.

Will always be my Uncle Bill.
I used to come down to that farm as a kid with him and Aunt Nancy. Had a lot of fun when I was there. Uncle Bill let me help paint his wooden boat, but not you could see. I remember taking my kite to the farm to fly. Was with him one day there helping cut a tree down. Me being a kid wondering around, I wondered in the path of the falling tree. Lucky it was the very top and only small limbs hit me. Uncle Bill thought I was dead! Will always remember Uncle Bill!

I came to know Bill during the early 1970s when we worked together in the bureau of patrol of the PGPD. There are lots of accolades I could write about Bill, but none higher then the level of professionalism he displayed as a police officer. Although I haven’t seen him since my retirement, I was quite taken by the news of his death.

Ed & Dottie Bellafiore/. I first met Bill in July 1968 when I joined the PG County PD.–he was my FTO, field training officer. Later we became close friends and he was best man at my wedding. Bill was the most honest person I have ever known. Never ask him a question if you couldn’t handle his answer. I remember harvesting tobacco with his siblings and although I tried hard keeping up–I was a novice. I asked Bill how I did, after ten hours in the sun , Bill responded: “Some day you might get the hang of it”. I will always cherish our times together hunting and fishing. Our deepest sympathy to Jeannie & family.

Jeanne, Holly, Chris and extended family of Bill, I am so deeply sorry for your loss of kind, considerate, helpful, generous and honorable Bill. He and his family moved nextdoor to my parents in Brandywine in the late 60’s or early 70’s. He became part of our family and was extremely helpful to my parents, especially my mom, after my dad died. He left the world a better place and may he have heavenly peace. Love and prayers to all who are grieving Bill’s passing.

To all the Norris family, I am so sorry to hear about Bill’s passing. As many have said Bill was a man of few words, but he had a way of showing love without saying a word. I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

I’m so sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. I worked with him in the Oxon Hill Station in the mid 60’s. Always a gentlemen and always quiet. When he spoke however, people listened. My sincere condolences to the Norris family. R.I.P.

I was privileged to serve with Bill on the PGPD. He was always gentleman and respected police officer. Jeannie, Jan, Kevin and family please know how saddened we are of Bill’s passing. Our last dinner with Bill and Jeannie was at the Waterside Inn in Placida, Florida where Bill shared some of his memories of the police department along with some hunting stories. We were blessed to know Bill. Rest In Peace my friend.

I was privileged to spend many hours with Bill hunting on the Patuxent. Although quiet, he was a great hunting companion, and prepared the best fried oysters, under adverse conditions, that I’ve ever eaten. He will be missed.

My condolences to the family of “Bill” Although I never had the honor of serving with him I knew him as a great police officer and mentor to those that he worked along side of and with as a supervisor. God Bless you and those whom you have left behind.
