Walter L. Wells, 73, of Prince Frederick, Maryland passed away following a farming accident on August 20, 2026, at Washington Hospital Center with his wife, Susie by his side.
Walt was born in Prince Frederick, MD on May 7, 1953, to Kenneth and Mary Ann Wells. He grew up in Huntingtown on his family’s farm, spending his time hunting, crabbing, and fishing as well as being involved with boy scouts and his local 4-H livestock club. He also worked alongside his father and brother in a family-owned hardwood flooring business.
Walt’s true passion was spending more than 50 years working the land alongside Susie, his lifelong partner on their farm, Taney Place in Prince Frederick, MD. He worked tirelessly growing corn, soybeans, tobacco, hay, and raised hogs and cattle. He was known for his strong work ethic, kindness, and willingness to help his neighbors. Farming was more than a job to Walt – it was a way of life that he was proud to pass down to his children and grandchildren.
Walt also enjoyed marketing Battle Creek Beef at the farmer’s market in California Maryland, a company he started with his wife and youngest son, Charlie.
Outside farming, he was dedicated to various community boards, including Calvert County Soil Conservation, Calvert County Farm Bureau, and Volunteer Fire Department service (Huntingtown and Prince Frederick).
Walt is survived by his wife, Susie, brother Michael (Robin), three children, Duke (Christie), Katie (RJ), Charlie (partner Crystal), twelve grandchildren, Crystal’s son, and two nephews. His family and friends will deeply miss him, but his memory will live on through the farm, the people he helped, and the lessons he passed on to future generations.

My deepest condolences at Walt’s passing. It seems impossible that he is gone but he leaves a legacy that everyone should be proud of.
Walt was my patrol leader when Troop 903 hiked 50 miles on Skyline Drive in 1968. I learned something from him on that trip that I have always remembered; if you want people to do something, you present it in a way that makes them want to do it. Even then, Walt had the gift of knowing how to do that, simple, low key effective leadership.
To me, he was that guy all his life. His marriage to Susie seemed so logical at the time, and the way they lived and worked together (not always the easiest thing!) for so many years proved that they had found their soulmates.
Walt ranks on the Mount Rushmore of my generation of Calvert County farmers and his service to the farm community and the community at large provide a great example of how to live your life.
He will be deeply missed and mourned, but also long remembered fondly by everyone who got to know him. He was talented at many things, but best and most of all, he was a farmer.
