Walter James “Jim” Lippold
August 2, 1938 – March 27, 2024
Walter James Lippold “Jim”, 85, of Port Republic, MD passed away on March 27, 2024 in Port Republic, MD. Jim was born in Annapolis, MD on August 2, 1938 to Walter and Marian Lippold. Soon after his birth, his father, a navy dentist, was transferred to the far east. They lived in China and the Philippines until the attack on Pearl Harbor. Jim returned to the states with his mother, while his father stayed and fought the war. After the war, his family lived many places ending up in Norfolk, Virginia where Jim was able to complete his high school education. Upon graduation he attended the US Naval Academy, graduating in the class of 1960. In 1961 he married his high school sweetheart, Joan Gibson. For the next several years, Jim served in the Navy as a nuclear submariner. Upon leaving the Navy in 1967, he attended N. C. State University to earn his Master’s degree in nuclear engineering, then went to work for Baltimore Gas & Electric at their Calvert Cliff’s nuclear power plant in Lusby, Maryland for the next 30 years retiring in 1998.
Jim and Joan spent the next 20 years traveling the world. They visited countries from China to Russia and many in between. Their favorite trips were River Cruises through Europe, winters in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico, and three times a year to Disney World. When not traveling, they enjoyed their home in Scientists Cliffs overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, where Jim enjoyed gardening, completing his Honey-do list, and spending time with family and friends. Jim was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Port Republic, Maryland, and a Charter Member of the American Chestnut Land Trust. He was also a professional engineer. Jim leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Joan, and his two daughters, Karen Lippold Myrick and Jan Lippold Huether, son-in-law, David Huether, and grandchildren, Benjamin and Hannah Huether, and James Myrick.

I was so sorry to learn of Jim’s passing. He was a star man at USNA, standing 78th in a class of 798.
Jim Lippold was a really fine and good man and my college roommate, Joan, was lucky indeed to have married him.
They had two lovely daughters, Karen and Jan, whom Jim adored.
They had a wonderful life together. Jim was someone who was trustworthy, honest and a really nice man.
The world has lost a very decent man. I am so sorry for the loss.
Thank you, Beverly, for such kind words about my father. You are so right, my father was the best of men! My sister and I were so incredibly lucky and grateful to have him as our father, as were his grandchildren to have such a devoted grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
Jim was a wonderful neighbor. For many years he and Joan shared the top of a hill with us. There was a lot between us that was destined for his daughter and her family. But in the meantime we would meet in the middle for chats and tales of their travel. We especially admired Jim for his deep love and concern for his grandson. We extend our condolences to Joan and all the family. Your care and love for Jim was an inspiration.
So sorry for your loss. Never thought about his family and dad’s connection to Pearl Harbor. Our parents and their infant, my oldest Bill, were fortunate to be attached to the DC/VA area since Dad was in the President’s Own Marine Band from ’31 to ’51.
We hope that this loss can be comforted as we all realize that our loved ones are at peace and healed. Let us know if there is anything that you need us to help with……………….
A lovely man and fine gentleman who has passed. I remember the many black tie ACLT dinners that Jim, Joan and Dan and Tina Boesz attended at Alan’s and my home in Washington, D.C.
We had great fun laughing when our dog consumed half of the Watergate desert cake from a table prior to being served. To the Lippold and Huether families my condolences with warm hugs.
To Joan,Karen and Jan-I was truly saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. He was a fine man and I enjoyed knowing him for all of these years. We had a lot of good times at Calverton events and he was always happy to see us. what a full and amazing life he led. May you be comforted by all your wonderful memories and the thoughts and prayers from all of us. He iwll truly be missed by many.
