Tilden Hardesty Garner
December 31, 1945 – May 29, 2024
Tilden Hardesty Garner was born on December 31, 1945 in Solomons, MD to Susan Victoria Hardesty and Benjamin Creston Garner. He was the youngest of their eight children: Orville Garner, Elayne Duff, Betty Lou Sealey, Gorden Garner, Doris O’Neal, Suzanne Hoffman, and Vernon Garner.
Tilden graduated from Calvert High School in 1963. After graduation, Tilden joined the U.S. Marines, and served four years. He spent time in the Dominican Republic on Embassy Duty. He was honorably discharged from the Marines on July 12, 1967.
After his service with the Marine Corp., Tilden was hired by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. He rose to the rank of Captain and served as the assistant Sheriff under Rodney Bartlett. He was a highly respected deputy and member of the community.
Tilden married Diann Dalton Shaw on June 24, 1981. They were married for forty-three years. Together they shared an adventurous life with her children, Michelle and Michael. Tilden taught them how to snow ski, waterski, and snorkel, among other activities. Their family grew and they now have a son-in-law, Michael Hull and their three children, Caitlin, Olivia, and Brooke, as well as their son’s children, Michael Shaw, Jr. and newly wed, Megan Beals and her husband Captain George Beals.
Tilden is the foundation of this family, and they will be forever grateful for his guidance, mentoring, kindness, and of course his love.
The family will host a luncheon in Tilden’s honor following the services at the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department, 13150 H.G. Trueman Road, Solomons, MD from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

After you retired you still came by the office to visit, share your career stories, look through old photos, and share details about others before my time. You gave this outsider a chance back in ‘99 and now I’ve had a 25+ year career in a field of work I love. Thank you for what you did for me and my journey, your smile and hug on LEOSA day will be eternally missed.
Tilden is as the very essence of personal integrity. He will be sorely missed. On behalf of the Vernon W and Doris Anne Garner family, our most sincere condolences to Diann and her family and those of the Calvert Co. community who were fortunate enough to call Tilden “friend.”
Our deepest love and prayers go out to Tilden’s family and his many friends. He has left a big void in our county but it now hold memories to share.
May his family and friends find comfort in the Lord. Rest peacefully our friend, God bless.
Tilden and I spent many a summer evening preparing the ball fields in Solomons for ball games. One of our tasks was dragging the infield. Tilden would drive the tractor and I would sit on the drag for added weight. Ostensibly this was to smooth out the infield. In reality the purpose seemed to be how many times he could cut sharp enough corners to throw me off the drag. He was very good at it. I am going to miss my dear friend
Tilden was a dear friend.
I loved him dearly!
He was one of a kind.
He always showed respect to those who deserved it the most.
He was a fine gentleman who liked to laugh.
Diann is precious as well and they were a great team.
Tilden loved his friends and we loved him right back.
Tilden was a loyal friend.
Tilden was quite the sailor and it a joy sailing with him.
Tilden will be missed by so many for being his precious self.
Tilden and I worked together for many years. I could always count on him for guidance even after we had both retired. He was a great mentor and even better friend. I will truly miss our phone calls… we didn’t solve the problems of the world but we sure tried. I will miss you, buddy.
Diann and family, I’m sending my condolences. I know I can’t do anything to make you feel better, but please know I’m sharing in your grief. It helps me to think of his loss like this – Tilden’s soul is now united with our ole buddy Mordi’s soul in Heaven. Rest in Peace, my good friends.
Tilden was a family friend that made an indelible mark on my childhood. Growing up in St.Leonard I remember this very kind and gentle but strong police officer who I looked up to. A lifelong friend to my parents and who’s presence will be truly missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with Diann and the family – there will be a huge void that will be difficult to fill.
Tilden became one of my favorite people the very first day we met! He was the first person to welcome Jim and I to Calvert County when we moved here in 2020 – he can strolling down our driveway in his John Deere Gator and gave us the history of our house and the neighborhood. Tilden was a wealth of knowledge. I don’t think Tilden ever met a stranger! I will miss our chats and joking around. He was a very kind person and would do absolutely anything for a friend. I always told him he was one of my favorite human beings and he always will be – I will miss my friend terribly!! Swaggers Point will not be the same without you Tilden! May you Rest In Peace my sweet friend.
Sorry to hear of the passing of a great guy! Tilden and I attended the police academy together and often spoke of the rivalry between the Army and the Corps during class breaks. He loved the USMC. We spoke infrequently over the years but you could always tell he never changed. Rest in Peace brother.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5 : 4
To Tilden’s family,
In your time of sorrow, may you find peace in His presence as He gives you strength for today and hope for tomorrow. 💛🙏🏻

Tilden loved his family and friends. He was a great role model for all that encountered him. He loved camping, boating, and sailing. He taught many the ropes in these adventures with patience and knowledge. He was always looking for the next adventure with his family. He was always willing to lend a hand or take the time to teach others. He will be missed at family gatherings.
Deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Diann and her family.
Tilden was a wonderful neighbor. He welcomed me, my wife and family to Southern Maryland in 1997 and made sure we felt “at home” in our new surroundings. He always greeted us with a smile and hello no matter how busy he was with chores. His legacy will live on at Swaggers Point Road and beyond with those who knew and cared about him.
I worked with Tilden at Courthouse for years. First as a deputy sheriff and as a security personnel in my last years of employment. What a gentleman he was! Dependable, well trained, and everything an officer of the law should be. I so enjoyed running into him in Solomons and talking about old times and old friends. He was a pillar of this Solomon’s community. He will be missed by so many. Mary Gott
I didn’t know Tilden for very long, but I met him in a time of need a couple of months ago. My cat had gone missing from near-by neighborhood and had been traced by scent tracking dogs to his property. He was so incredibly gracious in allowing me access to his property to try to trap my missing cat. He also called me multiple times throughout this time to simply check in and express his concern and empathy for the situation; as well as his expertise when it came to solving things. I know that he liked molasses cookies and loved his wife as well as his cat named Tilly. Sending his family love and good energy during this tough time. I only knew him briefly and he left a positive impact on me- I can’t imagine knowing him for a lifetime. Lots of love.
I knew Tilden way back when he was in high school. He went to school with my neighbor’s brother, Jimmy Holland. He was a lot of fun and we always had a great time laughing and carrying on during those years. I got to know him better when he joined the sheriff’s department. He always had time to talk whenever I saw him. I also remember Diane when she worked for the State and we became acquainted. It has been a while since I have seen them but I will always remember them. May the memories you have sustain you through this difficult time. I know he will be missed by all who knew him but especially his family, friends and neighbors from Solomons . Our sincerest sympathy to all of you .
I met Tilden in the early 70s when he got out of the Marine Corps. He worked for Fritz Grupp and then he worked at our marina for a few months before he joined the sheriff’s office. He was a loyal, wonderful friend. Then, when he married Diann we got to know Mike who hung around with our son while they were at Calvert High. What a good leader, role model, person and friend. I was so shocked when he told us his diagnosis over 10 years ago. He never quit being a positive person. We will miss him so much.

My condolences to the family. I, too, had the pleasure of working with Tilden for many years in the Sheriff’s Office. I recall the sometimes ‘serious’ conversations we had and the advice he would offer. RIP my friend.

It’s sad that we have to tell him how much he’s missed now that he’s gone. He was a unique person with many talents. I am glad I got to know him.
