Scott was my mentor and friend for many years. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. We in CG Headquarters will miss him dearly. I will miss him even more to include his laughter and sense of responsibility to do the right thing even when no one is looking. Sue you have my deepest sympathies. If there is anything you or the family needs, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or anyone in his CG family.

April 19 – Obituary: Thomas Scott Kuhaneck

Scott and I shared adjoining offices spaces for over 20 years at Coast Guard Headquarters in the Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance (CG-CVC). Soon after his arrival at Headquarters Scott was tasked with creating regulations and policy for the first ever national program for the safety and environmental inspection for over 4,000 US Flag towing vessels that travel along Americas Coasts and Inland waterways. He was respected for his dedication this important project and the depth of his professional knowledge. Scott brought together diverse interests across the Maritime Industry and Government to forge a workable program that is now fully implemented.

Scott was diagnosed with Colon Cancer at age 40 after a routine Colonoscopy. He maintained an indomitable spirit while he struggled to battle the cancer. Despite all of this he continued to carry out all his professional Coast Guard Civilian duties for the next two decades. All of us on the Coast Guard Headquarters staff who worked with him those many years miss his positive attitude and gentle sense of humor.

Scott was my “best bud” at MSO Chicago, and then we were together again in CGHQ as he entered the civilian world. He was a great inspiration of how a shipmate should be to others. He was always upbeat and positive, even when life was dealing him lemons…
