Thomas (Tom/Tommy) Luther Carroll, Sr., 84, of Lusby, Maryland, and formerly of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his residence on July 25, 2025. Born on August 8, 1940, in Prince Frederick, he was the beloved son of the late Luther C. and Bertha R. (Weems) Carroll.
A lifelong resident of Southern Maryland, Tom graduated from Calvert High School in 1958. Tom joined the Metropolitan Police Department District of Columbia on March 18, 1963, retiring on February 25, 1994 after 31 years of dedicated service.
On May 23, 1964, Tom married, Rhetta E. Somers, at St. James Parrish in Lothian, Maryland. Their marriage, rooted in love and partnership, spanned over 33 years, until Rhetta’s death in May of 1997. He was blessed with two children, Thomas Luther Carroll, Jr. (Sonja) and Tracy, along with four cherished grandchildren, Savannah Carroll and Darnell, DeAndre’ and Danielle Walls. One great-granddaughter Deja Rose Walls-Henault.
On April 18, 2003, Tom married Irene C. (Lankford) Whiston and were married for 22 years of love and partnership. From this union, Tom was blessed with three bonus children, Timothy (Phil) Whiston, Jon Whiston and Christina Sadosky along with cherished grandchildren Christian and Christa Crowdis, Zachary and Laci Whiston, William (IV) and Emily Gottleid and Navaeh and Natalya Sadosky. One great-granddaughter Zoey Rose’ Clements.
Tom had a zest for life and a deep love for his family. He loved watching Nascar and Redskins football, Saturday’s with the guys bonding over old cars and great conversations. Most of all he loved driving his prized 1960 Corvette to all the car shows.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Irene L. Carroll of Lusby, MD; his daughter, Tracy Carroll of Upper Marlboro, MD; three step-children Timothy (Phil) Whiston (Erin) of Naples, FL, Jon Whiston (Julie) of Waldorf, MD and Christina Sadosky (Daniel) of Amarillo, TX; Daughter in law, Sonja Carroll (Don) of Lusby, MD; One brother James (Wayne) Carroll of Lusby, MD; twelve grandchildren and two great-granddaughters who all, were the light of his life. As well as a host of relatives and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents Luther and Bertha Carroll; First wife Rhetta Carroll and Son, Thomas Luther Carroll, Jr.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Rausch Funeral Home, Lusby, MD.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Rausch Funeral Home, Lusby, MD. Interment will follow at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Lusby, MD. A gathering will be at the American Legion in Lusby from 3 to 6 pm.
Serving as pallbearers are Phil Whiston, Jon Whiston, Jeffrey Carroll, Darnell Walls, DeAndre’ Walls, William Gottleid, IV.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the HEROS, INC. 1200 29th St. NW, Washington, D. C. (heroes.org) and/or Hospice of the Chesapeake Foundation, John and Cathy Belcher Campus, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 21122.
