It is in a state of total devastation that we announce the sudden passing of Steven Anthony Hartling.
Steve was born in the Bronx, NY on January 17, 1977, and so leaves us at barely 48 years old. He attended school in the Lakeland School District a bit further upstate in NY, and then SUNY Oneonta, transferring to Salisbury State University in Maryland to complete his degree in Education. Steve served as a teacher and mentor to many students throughout the Maryland school system as a classroom teacher for 13 years, while continuing his own education by earning Masters degrees in Education and Mathematics. More recently Steve taught students from all around the state at the Camp Schmidt Outdoor Education Center, exploring the diverse ecology of the Chesapeake Bay. Steve was a naturalist, and always had a profound love of animals and the outdoors.
Steve is survived by his wife and soulmate Melissa Hartling, and their two sons Owen and Cole, as well as his parents James and Phyllis, brother James (Julia), sister Christine (Jason), sister-in-law Jenn (Rich), and father-in-law Skip. Steve was a loving uncle to Nina, Bryan, Julia, Henry, Madison, and Amelia, and was beloved by the entire extended family. Beyond the classroom and his work at Camp Schmidt, he was a football coach, a bartender in the community, a close friend and neighbor, and someone you could always rely on for a good laugh or a helping hand in a time of need. He will be remembered always.
A celebration of life will be held this summer. Details will be posted here and will be widely circulated, so please check back and keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.

With the deepest of sad condolences to all of the people who were close to Steve. I didn’t know him on a personal level but I had the blessing of meeting him at Camp Schmidt whenever the schools I was working at went there. I really have grown to admire the men and women who work there. Steve was always a ray of sunshine and emanated great wonderful vibes. He will definitely be missed.

My deepest condolences! Feeling blessed to have known Steve. He was a gentle and kind man and ensured me many times that our daughter (now 28) was always safe when she was at our old stomping grounds now called “Buckets.” He was always so calm and collected and the times we did venture out when he was working there, it was apparent that he also took the workers under his wings and they were being looked out for. Recently learned that every step he made was for his family and others. What a gift on earth he was. In these crazy times, you don’t come across a unselfish soul like Steve very often. Have NO doubt Steve will be taking care of his loved ones from above. RIP Steve. ❤

My most sincere condolences. Steve was such a kind and giving soul, always smiling and looking for something to smile about. We bonded over fossils and hunting for shark teeth (like his megalodon tooth), and getting kids excited about nature. PGCPS has lost a gem, and I pray his light is carried on in the thousands of children who saw his smile and excitement for life.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family and loved ones of Steve Hartling. Steve was a pillar of the PGCPS instructional program at Camp Schmidt, providing environmental education, teaching real life problem solving, and curating core memories that our staff and students will carry for a lifetime. I feel blessed that my fifth grade classes got to experience Camp Schmidt with him. Thank you Steve for a life well lived, and a job well done! ❤️

While this is so heartbreaking, I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to work with Steve. He was not just a co-worker but also a friend, lunch buddy, and our Santa every school year at Melwood Elementary School. I still remember Steve’s thick head of curly hair when I first started at Melwood. It was good staying in contact all these years also having the opportunity to party with him as he bartended. He was such an amazingly cool guy with a heart of gold. Every time I eat a Honey Crisp Apple I have Steve to thank for introducing them to me. You will be sorely missed. Prayers of comfort and peace to Melissa, Cole, and Owen.

I’m still in such disbelief. Steve was such a wonderful teacher and person. A gentle giant who would go above and beyond to make sure things ran smoothly and that learning was a fun experience for both kids and adults. My condolences go out to both his family and the staff Camp Schmidt. May you find comfort during this time of bereavement.
