Preston “Joe” Tranmer
February 6, 1941 – November 22, 2022
Preston “Joe” Tranmer, 81, of Huntingtown passed away at his home on November 22, 2022, with his daughter Paige and son Joseph by his side. Joe was born to Robert F., Sr., and Irvie E. Tranmer in 1941 in Washington, DC and raised in Capitol Heights, MD. He graduated from Suitland High School in 1959. He married shortly afterwards and that first marriage gave Joe two children, Joseph & Sherry. While living in Prince George’s County, Joe was active in several community organizations and played trumpet with the Elks and Redskins marching bands. He later married his wife and companion of 53 years, Judith, adopting her son Richard. Joe & Judy’s marriage also gave them their two youngest children, Brett & Paige.
In the early seventies, Joe & Judy moved their family to Calvert County and became active members of the Huntingtown United Methodist Church where Joe served for several years as a board advisor for building and repair projects, and also enjoyed singing in the church choir. Joe further served his community as an active member of the Optimist Club of Calvert for many years. He enjoyed fishing, playing guitar & was an avid golfer in his spare time.
Joe was a master tradesman. He started apprenticeship in his teens, becoming an expert floor layer and later a carpenter and master electrician. Over the years, Joe worked on many governmental projects, including laying flooring in The White House. With his brother Bill, Joe built many homes in Maryland. He was well respected in his field and received commendations for his fine work & craftsmanship. Later, Joe worked for the Prince George’s County government as an Electrical Inspector until his retirement in 2000.
Joe is survived by his wife Judith, four of his five children Joseph Tranmer (Teresa) of Prince Frederick, Sherry Hancock (Ted) of Chicago, Brett Tranmer of Annapolis, and Paige Curran (John) of Reston, VA, his 8 grandchildren Richard Jr., Ryan, Jennifer, Joseph Michael, Amanda, Brittany, Suzanne, and Melissa and his 8 great-grandchildren Audrina, Johnny, Grayson, Grace, Brandon, Jackson, Thomas, and Eren Samuel and his sister Audrey Garber of Hollywood, MD. Joe was preceded in death by his son Richard W. Tranmer, Sr., his sister Helen Whitley, and brothers Robert F. “Sonny’ Tranmer Jr., William D. Tranmer, and Ronald W. Tranmer.
Joe will be greatly missed and remembered by his immediate and extended family as well as his friends, co-workers, church family, and the community of Calvert that he loved and served so well. Flowers are welcomed but contributions to Calvert Hospice and the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department will also be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers.
