Ora Elizabeth “Betty” Fitzpatrick
April 19, 1930 – April 1, 2025

Ora Elizabeth “Betty” Fitzpatrick, affectionately known as “Betty Boop”, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 1, 2025 at the age of 94. She was born April 19, 1930, in Dunbar, PA to Daniel B. and Phoebe L. (Gildroy) Varndell. Betty grew up in the mountains of Jumonville, PA and graduated from North Union HS in 1948. She was a strong, hard working woman who loved life. She married William Fitzpatrick, the love of her life, on February 4, 1950 in Washington, D.C. and they created a beautiful life at their home in Camp Springs, MD for the last 66 years. They recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary with her loving family. Betty was primarily a homemaker which included supporting her husband’s Navy career, but often talked about working as a waitress at The Maryland Room in the Hecht Company in Marlow Heights until she was pregnant with her daughter Jane. She was a longtime member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Camp Springs where she volunteered during various church events. Betty enjoyed cooking, ironing, shopping, fresh flowers, gardening, collecting seashells, the Dallas Cowboys, and listening to country music “Kenny Rogers” and Pennsylvania polka. More recently she loved her sweets, a hot cup of coffee, and an occasional whiskey sour. Her neighbors and close friends referred to Betty as a hard worker who loved helping others with anything in need, especially cutting grass, raking leaves, laundry, and washing windows. She always looked forward to a trip to Pennsylvania to visit relatives.
Betty was a dedicated loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her family more than anything in the world and always enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and flourish in life. She will always leave behind a wonderful legacy and beautiful memories for her family to cherish forever.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 75 years, William Fitzpatrick, children Daniel Fitzpatrick and his wife Debra of Millersville, and Jane Smith of Owings, grandchildren Daniel Fitzpatrick and his wife Laura, Devin Fitzpatrick, David Fitzpatrick and his wife Molly, Meagan Smith, and Shannon Smith and her fiancé Joseph Gebicke, great-grandchildren Riley, Jasmine, Madelyn, Brandon, Shaylee, Ryan and Brynn, sister Phoebe Tomasek, sister-in-law Marge Fitzpatrick, brother-in-law Joe Fitzpatrick, Sr., and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Daniel and Phoebe Varndell, siblings Annabelle, James “Bud” (Geraldine), Frank (Betty), Nancy, and Eula (Clarence), son-in-law Raymond Smith, Jr, and several brother and sister-in-laws.

Although I never had the privilege of meeting this lovely lady, I can certainly see so much of her in her daughter and my dear friend Jane. Love and hugs to her dear family as they continue to cherish all the many years of special memories.
What a Sweet Lady & so glad I had the pleasure of meeting her in person. Her legacy will live on through my Sweet Friend Jane, & her Granddaughters, & so many others, she will forever be held dear to her family who clearly loved her and were so impacted by her Love. Sending my Love, Prayers & Sympathy to all the Family!
