Norman Wesley Broyles

April 9, 1929- March 19, 2021

Norman Wesley Broyles, 91, of Deale passed away March 19, 2021. He was born in Baltimore, MD on April 9, 1929 and grew up in Arlington, VA. Norman joined the United States Navy in 1946 and served during the end of WWII before he was honorably discharged in 1947. Following his time in the Navy, Norman would often visit Deale in the summers, eventually meeting Evelyn. They were married in Friendship in 1949 and have lived in Deale for 72 years. Norman was employed as an elevator mechanic for IUEC Local 10 and his job sent him to various places before his retirement in 1989. Norman was very active in the community. He was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church where he served on the building committee and was the Past Master of the Prince Frederick Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Deale Elks Lodge, the VFW, American Legion Stallings-Williams Post 206, Shady Side Masonic Lodge, and the Tin Can Sailors. In his spare time, Norman enjoyed traveling, tinkering in his workshop, wood working, refinishing furniture, reading, boating, being on the Bay, and playing the guitar. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Norman is survived by his wife Evelyn K. Broyles, children Delois Nuckols and husband William of Deale, Wayne Broyles and wife Vicki of Deale, and Gary Broyles of Honolulu, HI, 6 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and a brother Elmer Ewald. He was preceded in death by his brothers William and Paul Broyles.

I have know Norman and Evelyn my whole life. They live in front of the house that I grew up in. Both of them are family. Norman always had smile on his face and a hug for you. I have spent many days at their house with Delois my best friend. Norman was always ready to lend a hand to those that needed. He was a special man and will be missed. Greg and I are sorry for your loss and our thoughts and prayers are with the family. We are here if you need us.

Mr Broyles was Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader in Deale while growing up. I remember him well and he was always ready to assist with our projects. Later on, I always seen him at our firehouse breakfasts, dinners and carnivals. Gary, so sorry for your loss.

Norman and I worked together doing odd jobs around the Masonic Lodge and he became my friend as well as a brother. He embodied all the attributes of a Mason and a gentleman We shared the honor of being a couple of senior members of our lodge each having over 60 years membership. I will surely miss him and wish him to rest in peace.
