March 24 – Obituary: Mason Lee Gott

I go back a long way with Mason, there is approximately 6 years different in our age. Mason had always the cleanest cars. We cruised around every beach town in Calvert County. We played softball together for years when I got out of the Marine Corps and we worked together for many years. One night we had been, if I remember correctly at the drag races and we stopped on the way back at a bar in St Mary’s county called Penny’s. The local boys didn’t appreicate me and throw a beer bottle at me. Mason backed me up !!!

All that young foolish stuff is way behind us and I as I grew older I realized who Jesus Christ was and I recieved Him as my Savior.

The Apostle Paul shared these words as he approached his coming death:“For I am already being poured out like a drink offering,  and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge,  will award to me on that daand not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:6-8)
Paul knew that he would soon be put to death … as he penned the wordsThe time has come for my “departure.”
“Departure” was a term that was often used by ancient sailors.
It meant a time for the un-mooring of a ship. Paul was speaking of a ship that was about to depart.
A ship that would be un-moored from the land and would be freed to set sail.

In Paul’s lifetime when a ship left the harbor, many would gather at the harbor side and they watch the ship until it sailed over the horizon.
And as the ship slipped over the horizon, many on the shore would joyfully exclaim there she goes.
Yet somewhere on the other side of the ocean, there is another harbor.

And as that ship appears on their horizon, you can hear them say, Here she comes here she comes.
Much like that ship, Mason too has sailed into a new harbor. Un-moored from this side of eternity  set free.
Set free to sailset free to sail home.

For those who are in Christ Jesus. It is a glorious harbor where a dwelling place has been preparedby Christ himself for each believer.

Someday our ship will sail.

Semper Fi!
