Lawrence Sylvester Bowen
June 22, 1936 – April 27, 2022

Lawrence Sylvester Bowen, 85, of Huntingtown, MD, passed away on April 27, 2022 at his home. Born June 22, 1936 in Brooms Island Creek, MD, he was the son of the late Ernest Bowen and Susie Bowen (Mister). A true Calvert County soul, Lawrence grew up on a tobacco farm before the paving of Route 4. During the scarcity of World War II, Lawrence’s family of 11 harvested most of their food. Lawrence graduated from Calvert High School in 1955. He was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1959 and served two years as a Military Policeman. After serving as one of our nation’s heroes, Lawrence became a well-renowned plumber for Magnolia Plumbing. He “finally retired” as many would say, at the age of 81.
In 1991, he married Darlene Bowen (Jones) and they shared four children together. After living in Prince Georges County for a number of years, the couple settled in Huntingtown, MD. That sacred piece of land would become their forever home. A home filled with much foot traffic, Lawrence and Darlene were the true glue of their family. After losing Darlene in 2012, Lawrence spent a quiet decade keeping up with sports, watching the “news that repeats itself,” tending to his plants, and perfectly cutting his grass. Lawrence will be dearly missed by many – but his legacy of grit and persistence will be admired forever.
Lawrence is survived by his brothers, Charles Bowen (Darleen Bowen) of Lusby, MD, Landell Bowen of FL, and Everett Bowen of IL; his children, Ronald Bowen (Trina Bowen), of Kingsport, TN, Tammy King (Russell King) of Lusby, MD, and Terry Bowen, of Huntingtown, MD; his grandchildren Roy Rickett, of St. Leonard, MD, Thomas “Boots” Rickett (Lori Rickett), of Owings, MD, Kristina “Turkey Bird” McKeaver, of Huntingtown, MD, and Gregory Rickett (Lindsay Goodwin) of Loris, SC; and great-grandchildren Riley, Beau, and Summer Rickett of Owings, MD, and Brianna “Breezy” Flores of Loris, SC.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Bowen; parents, Ernest and Susie Bowen (Mister); brothers George, John, Paul, and Daniel Bowen; sister, Cecilia Brooks (Bowen); and wife, Darlene Bowen (Jones).

My heart aches and sadness surrounds me!! I was married to him 18 years and we dated 3 years and 5 mos. before getting married. He was my one and only first love and the father to two of the most wonderful sons that any parents could ask for. We divorced in 1976 but remained friends throughout all the years that followed and the older we got the more we seemed to enjoy each others phone calls and chats and when we visited it was always enjoyable, he attended 6 of my high school reunions down through the years as my guest!!!We raised the strict but it paid off! Daddy was involved in their scouting years and so was I with being a den mother and Lawrence was a Webelos leader. We kept them active in sports, church, Bible School, band, camping, etc. They grew up with the greatest respect for older people and to this day our 61 yr. old son still says Yes ma’am, no ma’am, yes sir, no sir, thanks etc. They both started working at the ages of 11 and 14 and worked in hay and tobacco and cleaning out dairy barns before school in the mornings; great workers!!! Neither of them were the typical teenager type; they went from 12 to 25 and skipped all those goofy and mixed up teenage years and both grew into a wonderful adulthood and made great careers in their lives!!! God called Kevin home at the young age of 26 so I know he has welcomed his Daddy and they are rejoicing !! May God comfort the hearts of all those who loved him, respected him and knew him in whatever way he may have touched their lives, He will never be forgotten and his memories will forever live in my heart!! R.I.P. my friend; we will meet again !!!!!

Mr. Bowen was the Father of two sons one I never met but Ron was a co worker that I had the privilege to work under as well as with. I met Lawrence through his son and through the Mechanical Contractor we worked with. I enjoyed going over to his house just before Christmas to buy items that he had made in his little Santa’s House. He will be missed by many so I’m sending my condolences to Ron and his family as well as Ms Durham
