Joyce "Joy" Ellen Pfanschmidt

Joyce “Joy” Ellen Popp Pfanschmidt, 89, of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, was surrounded by loved ones when she passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July, 1, 2026, at CalvertHealth Medical Center. Her treasured husband of 66 years, Lt. Col. (ret) Phillip “Phil” Oral Pfanschmidt, was at her side when she drew her final breath; he passed only nine days later. Joy is survived by daughters Debra Bressler (Matt) and Kristen Grundler (Gerard), six grandchildren (and spouses), and five great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents Walter Edward Popp and Florence Josephine Astle Popp.

Joy was born and raised on a farm in Haven, Kansas where she learned the values of hard work, faith, family, and a deep appreciation for nature. Those early years shaped the woman she would become – grounded, resilient, and always eager to learn.

Music was woven into the fabric of Joy’s life from an early age. She attended Wichita State University, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree as a Voice Major – lyric soprano. It was her singing that brought her together with the love of her life. Phil first met Joy while attending a friend’s wedding where she was performing. What began with a song grew into a remarkable partnership that would span six decades. Together they embraced the adventures of military life, traveling the world during Phil’s Air Force career before eventually settling in Maryland.

Joy’s love of music never faded. After twenty-five years as a performer, she felt called to use music in a different way – helping others heal. She attended Catholic University to study music therapy and became a Board-certified Music Therapist. For more than forty years, she dedicated herself to serving others, especially individuals with autism and communication challenges. She often described her work as being a “Voice for the Voiceless,” and those who knew her understood that this was far more than a professional calling – it was her life’s mission. She inspired friends and family that anyone can sing with the right pitch and song.

Deeply committed to giving back, Joy and Phil founded the youth organization Cyberpals in their local community. What began as a grassroots effort grew into the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maryland, providing mentorship, education, and opportunities to countless young people over the years. Also, she was a member of Rotary Club of Northern Calvert.

Above all, Joy treasured the people in her life. She loved gathering with family, celebrating milestones, making music, and creating meaningful connections. Her laughter, kindness, wisdom, and unwavering encouragement enriched the lives of countless friends, neighbors, students, clients, and loved ones.

Those who knew Joy will remember her beautiful voice, her compassionate spirit, her strength in the face of adversity, and her remarkable ability to inspire others. She leaves behind a legacy of love, service, learning, and music that will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew her.

A full military honors ceremony celebrating the lives of Joy and Phil will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, where they will be laid to rest together, a fitting tribute to a love story that spanned a lifetime and will endure forever.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake and Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maryland.

Though her voice is now at rest, the music, love, and light she shared with the world will continue to echo for generations.
