Joseph W Smith

Joseph W Smith Sr lived a life devoted to education, swimming, family, friendship, and helping others. He was a teacher, coach, scientist, father, grandfather, and friend who believed strongly in the potential of young people. His kindness, patience, humor, and encouragement touched countless students, swimmers, families, and friends throughout his life.

Joe was born in Seymour, Indiana on June 8, 1941, to Lewis W Smith and Helen Terkhorn Smith. He moved with his parents to Sharpsville, Pennsylvania and his sister Sandy was welcomed into the family shortly thereafter. He attended Virginia State University and Youngstown State University, beginning a lifelong love of learning.

On June 14, 1965, Joe married Anne Elaine Heron of Hopedale, Massachusetts. Together, they raised four children and built a life filled with family, friendship, and travel. They were married for 48 years until Anne passed away in January 2013.

Joe found his calling in education after conducting cancer research at Georgetown University early in his career. He became a teacher in Herndon, Virginia, where he spent more than 30 years teaching and coaching at Herndon High School. He made a lasting difference in the lives of his students and formed lifelong friendships with numerous colleagues.

Joe’s love of teaching extended well beyond the classroom. He spent countless hours on the pool deck teaching and coaching swimmers both young and old. Coach Joe believed that swimming taught lessons far beyond the sport itself—confidence, perseverance, responsibility, and respect—and, most importantly, that it was a life skill everyone should have the opportunity to learn.

After retiring to Cape Cod with Anne, Joe continued doing what he loved. He taught in the Barnstable and Sandwich Public School systems, including serving as a paraeducator in special education programs. He also continued coaching youth and Masters swimmers and worked at summer swim camps. He became an important part of the Cape Cod swimming community, known for his patience, enthusiasm, and belief in every swimmer.

But Joe’s greatest joy was his family.

He loved his children and grandchildren deeply. He looked forward to the many summers they visited Cape Cod and treasured the time they spent together relaxing on the beach, fishing, or treating them to seafood dinners and ice cream. He enjoyed Christmases with his family and friends in Virginia and Thanksgiving gatherings in Washington. These were moments that mattered most to him and created memories that his family will carry forever.

Joe is survived by his four children: Paige Anne Smith and her husband, Kevin Pachas, and her children Noah (Mackenzie Reulien), Luke, John Michael, and Jacob; Joseph “Jay” W Smith Jr and his wife, Tina, and their children Jessica (Herbeth Ventura), Jordan, Aidan, and Avery; David Lewis Smith; and Robyn Marie O’Connor, and her husband Dan O’Connor and their daughters Elaine and Lucille. He is also survived by his sister, Sandra Staunch, her 3 children Deanna, Fred, and Doug and her grandchildren.

Friendship was also woven throughout Joe’s life. Joe and Anne became close friends with Pat and George Bennett and Lyn and Henry Renk, friendships which lasted more than 60 years. Together they raised their children, traveled, and celebrated holidays and life’s biggest milestones.

Joe and Anne also enjoyed many “Smith and Mack Adventures” with their dear friends Scott and Cathy Mack. The foursome traveled all over the western United States, including the Oregon and Washington coasts, the Grand Canyon, and Hawaii, creating lasting memories and sharing a lifetime of laughter along the way.

After Anne’s death, Joe was fortunate to find a special friendship with Maryann Colombo. They enjoyed traveling together, including trips to Italy and Alaska among other beautiful places. Maryann quickly became part of the Smith family and brought friendship, companionship, and great happiness to Joe’s later years.

Joe died peacefully on August 18, 2026, after living with Alzheimer’s. He was 85 years old.

Joe’s life was measured not only by the years he lived, but by the people he touched. His students remember a teacher who cared for and challenged them. His swimmers remember a coach who believed in them and instilled a lifelong love of the sport. His friends remember a loyal and adventurous companion. And his children and grandchildren remember a father and “Papa” who loved being with them and who created a lifetime of memories.

His legacy reaches far and wide – in the classroom, in the pool, across generations of families, and most importantly within his own family.

His impact will be everlasting.
