John Mayer lived his life with a big heart, steady strength, and a spark of adventure, and on Sunday, August 24th, he passed away at his home in Solomons, Maryland, surrounded by family.

What set John apart wasn’t just what he did, but who he was. He was one of those rare people who left every place and every person better than he found them. Driven in business yet always thoughtful and witty, he showed up when it mattered most. He gave others opportunities, helping them chase their dreams, and believed hard work and kindness went hand in hand.

The water was where John’s spirit shined most clearly. He ran hundreds of charter fishing trips on the Chesapeake Bay, celebrating offshore victories — including a win at the White Marlin Open — and traveling the world with the International Game Fish Association.  While being on the water always brought him joy, it was sharing that joy and knowledge with others that gave him his greatest happiness.  John was a true captain in every sense of the word. Whether at the helm of his boat or in everyday life, he was steady, encouraging, and always fun to be around — often a father figure and safe harbor to many beyond his own family. His smile and the sparkle in his eyes spoke louder than words ever could; you just knew you were in good hands when you were with him.

That same spirit carried into his work.  In 1964, John founded Creative Sign Systems and led it for nearly fifty years. He built the business with grit and determination, and most importantly with people. He brought out the best in others by standing beside them, leading by example, and often repeating his famous phrase: “Just do it.”

In his younger years, he loved adventures in his small plane — even earning his instrument rating — along with waterskiing and hunting. He was a free spirit in the best sense, yet always an anchor for those who loved him.

John leaves behind his wife, Karen; his three sons, John, Brian, and Troy; and a wide circle of family and friends who will forever carry his love, laughter, and lessons in their hearts.

Above all, he was a good man — one who lived fully, loved deeply, and lifted others up. His legacy is written not just in the businesses he built or the adventures he had, but in the countless lives he touched with generosity, humor, and unwavering support.

A celebration of life will be held in his honor on Saturday, October 11th. If you have memories or stories of John, the family would love for you to share them at inmemoryofjbm@yahoo.com .

September 29 – Obituary: John Bernard Mayer

I’m deeply saddened by the passing of my uncle John. He was more than just family—he was the best uncle a person could ask for, he was a protector, and someone who gave so much of himself without ever asking for anything in return. His love, support, and quiet strength shaped so many people including myself.

I will always carry with me the lessons he taught, the kindness he showed, and the countless memories we shared. His absence leaves a space that no one else can fill, but his spirit will forever live on in my heart.

May he rest in peace, knowing how deeply he was loved and how profoundly he’ll be missed.
