On Sunday August 14, Joan Marie (Abell) Joy, wife and mother, passed away suddenly at St. Mary’s Hospital.

She was 64 and a lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County. Born January 13, 1958 to Calvin T. Abell Sr, and Agnes Rosalie (Frank) Abell, of Valley Lee, MD.

She grew up in Valley Lee where she picked tobacco on her grandparent’s farm and crabbed along the local shores. She retired from Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship, where she worked for 25 years. She was an avid reader, gardener and animal lover. A lifelong Catholic, her favorite saint was Padre Pio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Joseph Abell Sr (wife Barbara), and brother Theodore Abell Jr (wife Nancy).

She is survived by her husband Jay Joy, her dog Boo, her children Joe McGuire (Brandie), Jennifer McGuire (Chris), and John McGuire, and her grandchildren Joseph McGuire Jr, Felicity McGuire, and Clayton McGuire. She is survived by 5 siblings, Robert Abell (Cora) of Texas, Linda Hibbler (George) of Illinois, David Abell of Florida, Patricia Abell of St. Mary’s Maryland, and William Abell (Tina) of St. Mary’s County Maryland.

On Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at 10am a visitation will be held at Olivet United Methodist Church, 13575 Olivet Rd, Lusby, MD 20657 with funeral services beginning at 11am. Interment will be held immediately thereafter at the Olivet United Methodist Church cemetery, 13575 Olivet Rd, Lusby, MD 20657
