Jane Helen Hagen
November 7, 1940 – October 1, 2021
Jane Helen Hagen, age 80, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Oct 1, 2021. Our mother was born & raised in Bellingham, WA. She attended Western Washington University before working as a medical assistant to local general practitioners. Shortly thereafter, she married Jim Hagen, also of Bellingham, and they remained together for 32 years until his passing in 1992.
In her time as a parent, our mother regularly taught us life realties & lessons so as to prepare us for adult life. She taught us about religion: “You better pray that stain comes out of the chair.” She practiced pride of workmanship: “I just finished cleaning, so if you’re going to kill yourselves you better do it outside.” She was ironic: “Keep crying and I’ll give you something to cry about.” And she was logical: “Fall off that swing and break your neck and you won’t be going to the movies with the rest of us.”
After many years as a Marlton resident in Upper Marlboro, MD with her husband, Jane relocated in 1999 to North Beach. As an empty-nester, she was a long-time member of the NB town council, NB House & Garden Club, Red Hat Society, Maryland Municipal League, and Trinity Episcopal Church. Our mother was also proud to be part of the extended Navy family.
She is survived by her four children John Hagen, Julie Mitchell, Jay Hagen, and Jennifer Schwartz. She is also survived by her brother Bob Martin and her grandson Jakob Schwartz.
Burial with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery will be on a TBD date in Nov, as Arlington scheduling permits.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Jane’s passing. We worked together at Marrick and I often joked with her calling her the “Mayor of North Beach.” She was a hard worker and always involved with her community. Her love of family always showed in our conversations about her children and her beloved grandson. My condolences to the family during this difficult time.
I am a better councilman because of Jane. She was a very positive influence on me through her work ethic, straight-talk, wisdom and kindness. Having coffee with Jane will always be among the highlights of my own tenure and life journey. Our shared discussions at MML functions and observing the way she held herself are things that I’ll carry forward. Thankful for her generous friendship, rest In Peace Jane.
Jane truly loved North Beach and volunteered to help a variety of organizations. Jane and her late friend, Barbara Gray, were movers and shakers for the Lions Club organization. They worked on the North Beach Historical Society together and the House and Garden Club House Tours. We want to thank her family for sharing her with the Beach community that she loved so much. Condolences from the Bayside History Museum.
My deepest sympathy to the family and friends. She was an asset to her church, Trinity Episcopal. She & I served as co-chairs of Altar Guild. She shared many stories about her children and grandson. Peace and love to all of you.

So sad to hear of Jane’s passing. It was such an honor to work with her on the Public Safety Committee a few years back. She was so supportive; she always listened. Jane played a significant role in the betterment of North Beach, making it the safe, quiet, pleasant and desirable community it is now. You could count on Jane to always follow through. I will miss her dearly. My deepest condolences to her family. God’s speed, dear Jane . . .
Sending our deepest sympathy. Jane was an active member of the Calvert County Neighborhood Watch Program for many years. She was always looking for ways to make Chesapeake Beach and Calvert County “better”, if that was possible. Her energy, smile and kindness were always on full display. We will miss her and send our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
So very sorry to hear of Jane’s passing. I worked with her for many years and was also her neighbor. She will be missed greatly both at work and in North Beach. Her love for her family and community was evident in everything that she did.
I was your driver when JB took over the Pargo those many years ago. I am deeply sadden by the news of your mother’s passing and could tell both of your parents instilled courtesy and graciousness.
Respectfully,

To Jane’s family, David and I so wanted to be there this evening to wish Jane our final farewell, however David has been quite ill since Thursday and we are so upset that we could not spend this time with you and the family thinking of you and may God bless you.
Just learned of Jane’s passing! What a lady….always willing to help within her community, church or civil arena when needed….never asking to a pat on the back….she simply thought participation and giving were ingredients that made a person better suited to live/shrive within that particular community or organization. I will always reflect upon my interaction (and that of my family) with Jane….with a smile on my face…for she brought happiness to all who had the honor of knowing her. My sincere condolences to the Hagan family, sincerely, Richard Sothoron, Upper Marlboro
I was so sad to hear that Jane passed away. The world has truly lost an amazing woman.
We just recently got together for a catch up time and she was full of wonderful stories about John n Shelleen, Julie, Jennifer n Felix, Jay n her amazing grandson, Jakob. She was so truly proud of her family! She was a true giver to all who she touched. I feel blessed to have had her in my life for over 35 years. She will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.
My sincere condolences to the Hagen family. I only knew Jane for a short period of time. Was introduced to her by my neighbor as I was new to the area.
Actually I just found out about her passing a few mins ago and have shed a lot of tears and I’m truly in shock. She was such a pleasant, smart and friendly lady I loved being in her company and I’m truly in shock right now. May God rest her soul.🙏
Dear Hagen Family –
We are a little late this year in our Christmas cards being sent and as we were going through our received list, we noticed that we hadn’t received our annual letter from Jane. Mary Rose looked up here home town and saw the obituary. We are so sorry to hear of her passing. We enjoyed our yearly update from North Beach. She always had wonderful things to say about all of you kids. I am happy that she is now with Captain Hagen. I am also happy that she did not suffer. Both of us hope that we are so fortunate to ‘go easily and quietly’. We are so sorry for the loss of your mom. She was a very nice lady and from the obituary, it appears we were all of the same cloth. Pretty much a straight shooter who saw things as they were. I hope this Holiday season is peaceful in all ways. Again, we are sorry for your loss. Your mom was a wonderful and kind person. We will miss her. Take care of yourselves. John, Julie, Jen and Jay: my thoughts and condolences go out to you and your families. Fond memories of her as one of the “swim moms” I grew up with. RIP. Love, Maureen Fahey.
Thank you Maureen. This meant a lot. She sure love being a swim mom. It’s so hard to lose a parent. Many fond memories of all of us growing up together. Times I will never forget. Thanks again. Take care
