Jane Adeleine Leitzel Schmidt passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023.
Jane was born on April 22, 1921 at the Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, DC., the daughter of the late William Clayton Leitzel (1891-1923) and Florence Moody Leitzel (1896-1982) of Washington DC.
Jane lived her life in Washington DC, Montgomery County and Calvert County, Maryland. She was employed by the Federal Government from 1950-1974, having worked for The National Bureau of Standards and the Department of Commerce, Product Safety Commission. She was a member of the Erasmus Perry Chapter and John Hanson Chapter of the DAR, a member of the Paul Hill Chorale and a lifelong Methodist, most recently Trinity United Methodist Church, Prince Frederick, MD.
Jane is survived by her daughters, Laraine S. Kretchman (John) of Meyersdale, PA, and Susan S. Cox (David) of Prince Frederick, MD. She has six grandchildren, John S. Kretchman (Chris), Amy W. Rippey (Brian), Jennifer L. Darnell (Arthur), David A. Cox, Jr. (Cathy), Catherine C. Hamilton (Bobby), and Charles R. Cox (Bayleigh). In addition, she leaves 13 great- grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Jane always signed her cards “Love You Forever”. She loved unconditionally and fiercely with grace, compassion, and positivity for 102 years. The world lost a premier member of the Greatest Generation, Jane. She is reunited with countless loved ones who preceded her in death; her husband of 68 years, Raymond G. Schmidt (1921-2011), and her father whom she outlived by 100 years, to name a few. She left in her own way, peacefully and quietly, leaving comforting memories and joy in her gentle wake.
Private services will be held in the future.
Inurnment will take place at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, where she will join her husband, Raymond.
