Helen S. Mister passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026 at her daughter’s home in Owings, Maryland, surrounded by her loving family.  Helen was born in Owings on August 5, 1936, the only child of William and Velma Spicer.  She was delivered at home by Dr. Hugh Ward, one of the fewcountry doctors practicing in Calvert County at the time.

Helen was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture for 38 years.  She retired as the County Executive Director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office, now the Farm Service Agency, serving farmers in Calvert and St. Mary’s counties. As a farmer’s daughter and later a farmer’s wife, she enjoyed supporting the farming community.

In her fifties, Helen discovered a passion for traveling.  She enjoyed planning long-distance trips, plotting her routes, and driving to her destinations.  She traveled with many dear friends and family members, and she was proud to have visited 48 states.

In her retirement, Helen enjoyed quilting with her friends at Quilters by the Bay.  She created and gifted many beautiful quilts to family, friends, veterans, Project Linus and Care Net.  She continued taking trips with her travel buddies, gardening in her yard, and listening to country music.  One of the highlights of her life was meeting Vince Gill backstage at a concert.

Helen was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church forseventy years.  She was actively involved in the Women’s Society of Christian Service, taught Sunday School and served on the Altar Guild. Her church was an important part of her life, and she enjoyed contributing wherever she was needed.

Helen’s family meant everything to her.  She loved them deeply and was proud of each of their accomplishments, whether big or small.  She always enjoyed sharing news about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to share stories about them.  Her love, support and pride in her family were evident to everyone who knew her.

Helen was a loving and devoted wife whose commitment to her husband, Hagner Reid, never wavered.  With extraordinary strength, compassion and selflessness, she cared for him throughout his last illness, ensuring he was surrounded by comfort, dignity, and love until his passing in December 2024.

Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years, Hagner R. Mister, and her parents. She is survived by her children, Carolyn Hobbs (William), Sherri Kennedy(Dan), and Mark Mister (Dawn); six grandchildren, Matthew Hobbs (Susan), Katie Wingate (Jeremy), Jason DeLizio (Ashley), Julie Kennedy, Jordan Mister and Cody Mister; and ten great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church of Prince Frederick, or to Hospice of the Chesapeake, which provided wonderful care and comfort to Helen.
