George J. Munson
April 21, 1922 – December 11, 2022
George J. Munson was born in West Haven, Connecticut on April 21, 1922 to George and Maud Munson. The family moved to Washington DC in 1935 and he graduated from Eastern High School in 1941. George entered the Navy in September 1942 and was a 2nd Class Carpenter’s Mate with the 78th Sea Bees and 82nd Sea Bees. During World War II he was engaged in the following campaigns: New Guinea, Admiralty Islands and Okinawa. During his time in the Navy, he received medals for the American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Three stars, WWII Victory, Navy Occupation and Navy Reserve, Good Conduct and Combat Action Ribbon.
George married Katherine Finch on November 25, 1949 and raised 6 children while living in District Heights, Maryland. He worked for Vitro Corporation for 36 years, retiring in January 1988. He was a life member of VFW Post 9619 since 1977 and enjoyed membership in other VFW and American Legion Posts.
George is survived by his children George J. Munson III, William Munson (Kathryn), Katherine Munson, Linda Belanger-Iacobucci (David), and Thomas M. Munson, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine, and by his son James in 2018.
