George Clayton Gross III
September 24, 1947 – June 30, 2024
George C. Gross III, born September 24, 1947, in Washington, DC, died June 30, 2024 at Washington Hospital Center after a lengthy illness.
As a young man, George lived in California, Germany, and Alaska with his family while his father served in the US Air Force. After those stations, the family settled in Rest Haven in Deale.
After graduating from Southern High School class of ’65, George attended American University. While there he began working as an IT professional which became his lifetime career.
During that time, he married Robin Catterton, and together, in their 58 years of marriage, they raised three children now with families of their own, Jennifer Gross and husband Mike Hostettler of Shady Side, Jody Gross and wife Julia of Cambridge, and Jessica von Schilcher and husband Dietram of Friendship.
Perhaps no job or career was as an important to George as being Papa to his five grandchildren, Della, Fin, Julian, and Kort von Schilcher and Jude (George V) Gross. Whether taking day trips with his grandchildren throughout Southern Maryland, visiting local restaurants as a friendly, talkative group, or cooking in Papa’s kitchen and gardening in the yard, he valued their time together. He instilled his love of history, antiques, ancestry, gardens, and food into them. His love and knowledge of music have become a bonding point of interest as they have gotten older. His pride in their accomplishments and his love will stay with them as they go on.
He is survived by his immediate family as well as his brother Bill Gross and his wife Judy and his aunts Sue Lewis and Lina Revell. He was preceded in death by his parents George C. Gross, Jr. “Lefty” and Jean Lewis Gross.

Dear Family,
I am so sorry to learn of George’s passing. We all go back to the early 1950’s as family friends. So many beloved family members have gone ahead.
This is a tough loss. I will keep everyone in my prayers.
I am so terribly sorry to hear of George’s passing. Having grown up with George living across the street brings back many fond memories of our youth. Robin, with the loss of George there are simply no words I can offer to ease the pain. If there were I would say them now.

So sorry to hear about George passing away! My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
Our families had many happy times together in Deale. I will never forget the TV laying in the front yard!

Sorry to hear about George leaving us so young. He was a great fellow and he left us too early.
Mary and I will certainly pray for his family.
