George Andrew “Andy” Grahame
September 21, 1957- January 11, 2021

George Andrew “Andy” Grahame of Owings, MD passed away on January 11, 2021 at his home, lovingly cared for by his family. Andy was born on September 21, 1957 in St. Petersburg, FL to Malcolm Gordon Grahame, Jr. and Martha Williams Grahame. The family moved to the Grahame Farm in Owings in 1961. Andy graduated from Northern High School in 1976. He was a Master Plumber and owned Springfield Mechanical Services for many years. For the last five years, Andy was employed by the Calvert County Board of Education.
Andy is survived by his wife Mary Catherine “Cathy” Grahame, whom he married on May 5, 1990, and his children Malcolm Andrew “Drew”, Mason Alexander (Rachael Keeney, fiancé), and Jackson Stewart Grahame. He is also much loved by his son’s girlfriends, Rebecca Stanislav and Rachael Owens.
In addition, Andy is survived by his parents Gordon and Martha Grahame and his twin sister Martha Grahame Hyde (Tom). He is predeceased by his brother Malcolm Gordon “Gordy” Grahame, III. He is also survived by his in-laws, Bob and Barbara Stewart and his sisters-in-law, Jennifer Stewart Patterson (Mark), Janice Stewart Graner (Jim), and Valerie Stewart McLaughlin (Seth). Uncle Andy will be dearly missed by Emily Hyde Gilcrest (Matt) and Allison Hyde; Robert (Hannah), Erin, Timothy, and Anna Patterson; Bridget Graner McMillon (Joshua) and Daniel Graner; Vivian and Finn McLaughlin; and his great-niece and nephew Brooklyn and Ryan Gilcrest. Andy also leaves a tremendous group of friends, including several who especially aided and sustained him during the challenges of the last few years.
Andy loved everything about the family farm: planting and sharing his crops, hosting trap shooting events, ice skating, sleigh riding, hunting and fishing. He found comfort in his hobbies and the opportunity to share them with friends and family. Other passions involved hunting, fishing, crabbing, and boating with his boys and friends usually at his second home, “The River Shack.” He loved morning rides to Bowen’s for bacon and sausage (arguing it was closer than Dunkirk even though it’s not) to make a buffet spread for whoever was around. He loved goose hunts, goose blind breakfasts, a good dog and ABBA. He loved potatoes – mashed, baked, fried for breakfast, as long as they came from the farm. He always had water in the carburetor of whatever engine he was working on. He only ever fished two lures: a stingsilver or a plastic worm. If there was a toadfish anywhere near his bottom rig, he’d catch it. He treated the friends of his boys as his own and would do anything to help them.
Andy was always on the move. In his work, he was honest and dependable, including using his expertise to help friends and the community with projects. He also taught us to play hard, especially in his 25 years of coaching baseball when he often coached more than one team a year. He was the first one on the boogie board to ride waves, play wiffle ball with the kids, make sure the trot line was baited, and the crabs cooked perfectly. Andy was really a jack of all trades, a professional tinkerer. He taught by example, and his best Dad teaching moments were things he did, never things he said. He was the Grahame boys’ dad, but also best friend – built in buddies (BIBs) from the start. He surrounded himself with outstanding men that provided some of the best male role models a young boy could ask for (Uncle Mark, GrandBo, Pop, Alex, Ron, Mike C., Rick, Mike F. Hutch, and Big John).
Andy laughed at his own silly jokes and the pranks he loved to pull. He enjoyed dressing his scarecrow on the Grahame farm for different occasions and for the enjoyment of the Lower Marlboro area community. He was fun, agreeable (“yes, Sweetie”), and patient – unless he was sitting in a deer stand. A loving dad and husband, we hope a little of him rubbed off on everyone who knew him well. Our loss is great.

Dear Cathy,Drew, Mason, and Jack and the Grahame and Stewart families
We send our love and condolences. What a beautiful tribute you wrote for Andy. He was the kindest man and we got such a kick out of the scarecrow and the care he took decorating it for our community. May God bless and comfort you all in the days ahead and may Andy Rest In Peace. Hugs, Carlton,Theresa,Janie,Ryan and Bryce Leslie
I saw Andy pulling out of his driveway early in the morning recently, and I asked him if he was heading over to the farm. He said yeah, going back. He said he’d been there all morning, which seemed like a lot at 7:30! I’m still gonna look for his truck when I run past the farm. We love you Cathy, and Grahame boys.
Dear Grahame Family,
We were saddened to learn of Andy’s passing. We will miss seeing him getting tools and equipment for his work and having short converstions with him over at the farm. We know this is a huge loss for your entire family. May his spirit be kept alive by carrying on his dreams, becoming all that each of you can be, and taking care of each other. May his new peace become part of your own peace knowing that he no longer is in pain.
Much love to each of you from your neighbors,
Jean and Barry Berube
Dearest Cathy, Drew, Mason, Jack, Grahame Family and extended Family , Andy was a strong , determined ,respected ,loved man, he loved his family, farm and his life, May he Rest In Peace.
Cherish your beloved memories, he is in your hearts forever. God Bless you and keep you strong. Faith and Family always, Linda
Andy was the 5th sibling in our home growing up and all of us mourn the loss of our brother. We experienced Andy’s strong work ethic, sense of humor and loyalty, even as a young man. To see how he lived his life growing into a great husband, great father and committed son, we wanted to share our lifelong love and respect for Andy. We pray for Cathy, his sons, Martha, and Gordon, that they might find find some comfort in knowing what Andy has always meant to the Gemeny family.
To the Grahame Family, Andy was one of the best men I have ever known! He never stopped, except maybe to enjoy a cheese burger. 🙂 He was always the first one to offer to help. The past few years Andy fought so bravely and with such dignity that one could only admire his atrenfth of character. He ALWAYS greeted folks with a smile and a firm handshake. He was so focused on his family and was an amazing father! I am proud to have known him and so deeply saddened at his passing. May he Rest In Peace and live large in all your memories! The Ericksons are here if you need anything and we will keep Andy and all of you in our prayers.
I got to know Andy as a Coach, patiently teaching 8 and 9 year olds the game of baseball along with deeper lessons of resiliency and self-belief. No matter how tense a situation became, Andy had that coy cowboy-like smile, a smile that spoke a thousand words and instantly snapped things into perspective.
He was a quiet, seemingly simple man, with incalculable complexities constantly swirling under his farm-tanned skin. He was wise –almost prophetic at times– as he assessed a matter at hand, and distilled down to a binary choice- what is right and what is wrong. Andy did right. He thought right. He acted right He treated others right. He lived right. Perhaps as notable, Andy allowed other people to make their own choices. He was a live and let live kind a’ fella’ offering opinion but never casting judgement.
He demonstrated the character we all want in a friend, a coach, a father, and a man. He will be missed, but leaves us with warm memories and an indelible spirit.
I got to know Andy even better through the time I was fortunate enough to spend with Jackson. Jack is an exceptional young man and has been so since the day I met him on a muddy, run-down ball field on a crisp Spring morning. Like his father, Jack was unwaveringly smiling, humble, hard-working, respectful, engaged, reliable, and warm. My life was made better by the time I shared with Jack and his fine father. Thank you Grahame family for giving so much to my family and for sharing Andy with us.
Lovingly and Gratefully,
Rich Nickels
Dear Grahame Family,
Years ago Andy worked for my husband, Billy Burkman. He and my brother-in-law were good friends and Andy lived at the old Burkman farmhouse with Jimmy. Andy was a kind soul even at that young age. He was a hard worker and when he decided to go into plumbing we wished him well. He actually installed a bathroom in our basement on Parker’s Creek Rd.
He was a fine fellow back then and from all accounts he remained so. I’m sad to see this news. The world was a better place with Andy
in it.
May God comfort you and give you strength to face the days ahead.
Best to all,
Jeanine Burkman
My deepest condolscences to the Grahame family. I have fond memories of childhood times spent with you. Martha (CC) and Andy were great playmates. Mr. and Mrs. Grahame were kind and generous- Mr Grahame a tease! I have memories of falling off a board and ending up covered in cow excrement, falling through the ice when skating- what a cold walk back to the house; and Andy running off to get his mom when the dog bit me in the face. It might sound like a lots of difficulties- but no, it was wonderful.
The Grahame family is a great example of warmth, kindness, and love. May the good memories of Andy help you through this difficult time. And may you share in God’s love and sadness of this loss.

I’m so sorry to hear of this. I fondly remember when he and a friend of his rented a house across the street from my family in Neeld Estate back in the late 70s. I’m sure I have some funny pictures we took from back then. He was an awesome guy with a great sense of humor. I’m sure he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of you.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Andy’s passing. Though I hadn’t seen him in many years, I still have fond memories of times we spent hunting and fishing as teenagers, his laugh and great sense of humor. My heart goes out to his family and those close to him.

My deepest condolences to Martha and the rest of the family. I am so sorry for your loss. Andy was a classmate of mine, as was Martha. He was a good kid so I know he was a good adult.
