Gavin William Hurley
April 21, 1971 – August 21, 2022
Gavin William Hurley, 51, passed away August 21, 2022, in his home with the loving care of his family and Calvert Hospice. Gavin was born April 21, 1971 in California to George William Hurley and Judith Ann Hurley. Gavin with his brother Geoff spent most of his formative years in California, with the exception of time living in Italy due to his father’s job relocation. His family relocated to Maryland where he received his Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Towson University. Gavin met his wife Kristyn (McGovern) Hurley in 1999, marrying her in September 2001. Together they were blessed with two children, Garrett William Hurley and Sarah Marie Hurley. The family eventually moved to Calvert County making Owings, Maryland, their home.
In his professional life, Gavin had a very successful career in the defense industry working as a senior software engineer. In his personal life, he had a wide variety of interests and passions that he devoted his time to. He loved traveling, working on cars, boating, and fishing. Gavin was a devoted father immersing himself in all his children’s scholastic and extracurricular activities. Gavin had a love for music, a love that led him to become a very talented musician with the ability to play a myriad of diverse instruments. He would soon share this love with his children, encouraging them to delve into the world of music. Not only this, but he also coached their soccer teams, directed school plays and was a member of the Northern High School Marching Patriots Pit crew. One of his greatest passions was his ongoing involvement in Scouts BSA as a Den Leader and Assistant Scoutmaster for both of his kids’ Troops. It was through the BSA that he indulged his passion for camping and hiking. He loved spending time with his many friends and family. Kristyn, Garrett and Sarah were the center of his universe.
Gavin is lovingly remembered by his wife of 21 years, Kristyn Hurley; his two children, Sarah Hurley and Garrett Hurley; his brother Geoffrey Hurley; his mother-in-law Janice McGovern; his sister-in-law Kristine Hurley; niece Evelyn and nephews Vincent and Gavin Hurley; his aunt Judy Adams; his uncle Norris Poulsen; cousin Kevin Poulsen and his wife Monica; along with his many relatives and friends.
Following Gavin’s Memorial Service, a reception will be held for family and friends at the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department Banquet Hall.

I cannot express my sadness in first learning about Gavin’s illness and now his death. He was invaluable as teammate as we worked on theatre shows for Mt.Harmony Elementary School. Praying for the family. He will be missed and his absence felt. It’s always the good ones God takes first. ❤️
You guys truly were the center of Gavin’s Universe, and what a beautiful Universe that was – his kindness, humor, friendship, compassion & leadership have left a profound and wonderful impact on the lives of all who knew him. ❤️ Good Bless you all and Rest In Peace my amazing friend!
The Wood family sends our heart felt condolences to Kristyn, Garrett and Sarah. Gavin was inspirational to the not just the Scouts but to everyone he came in contact with. He will be greatly missed.
Our Love,
Dana, Heather, Nicholas and Dylan
As I said above, I knew Gavin at a much younger age. It turns out that he was only 7 years younger but, when we met that was an ocean of time. We did a lot of table top gaming. Gavin liked running one shot horror games where we all died. 😉 He also worked for Smith, Abbott; my parents’ company years ago. I was happy to go to the memorial and see the man he became. He was clearly a wonderful person and I am sad I never knew that man but, the man I knew was good too.
Tonight, I raise a glass to Gavin “G Smoove” Hurley and old memories as well as a man who achieved a hell of a lot. Good job old friend. Good job.
Having Gavin as an older cousin was super fun ! He had the best imagination and we were always entertained or part of the show and constantly laughing. his and Geoff’s visits to Montana made us so happy and I was always very proud to show him off to friends. With that big brain and his ability to amaze anyone he could have been anything he wanted on this earth, I’m so glad he chose the path he did ✨and to be an amazing husband and father , most will never know the contributions this immensely talented Man made . The world is a better place having had him in it, if only so long .God bless him and his family . Rye
