Ernest Howard Jones
August 19, 1937- August 23, 2020

Ernest Howard Jones, 83, of Lusby, MD – passed away peacefully at home on August 23, 2020. He was born August 19, 1937 in Prince Frederick, MD, and was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and one grandson. He is survived by his sons: Tony (Pam), Rodney (Christine), and Garth; his sisters: Rose Rush and Shelby Gibbons (Charlie); his brother: Jerry Jones (Ruth Ann); his 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ernest was the loving son of Edward Leo Jones and Edith Elizabeth Jones; loyal brother to Lucille Murphy, James E. Jones, Marie Schmidlen, Rose Rush, Lucy V. Willis, Wm. Claude Jones, Jerry Jones, and Shelby Gibbons. Raised with a tough work ethic and a strong faith in God, Ernest Jones believed that “A man should work every day, no matter what.” From the 1940s through the 60s, he grew up with his brothers and sisters, working some of the largest tobacco farms in Calvert County, MD. He would later become an accomplished painter, working many years for the shipyard in Drum Point, followed by the Naval Service Weapons Center in Solomons, MD. In 1975, he began his own business, EJ’s Paint Service, painting for both residential and commercial properties. It was often said by many in his trade, “Watch out! If you stand still too long, Ernest Jones will paint you!” Reluctantly, after 50 years of painting, he finally hung up his brushes, retiring in 2000.
Ever devoted to his family and friends throughout his lifetime, Ernest loved and cherished his sons, and adored his brothers and sisters. Fondly nicknamed “Uncle Bunk,” he watched over his nieces and nephews, as if they were his own, and always looked forward to visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the years, he thoroughly enjoyed hosting countless family picnics, working in his workshop, being outdoors, having crab cakes at Stoney’s, sipping on his coffee, and greeting family and friends who would stop by to visit.
Music was the love of his life! While Elvis Presley was, without question, his all-time favorite artist, the sounds of bluegrass, country, and gospel music could be heard playing throughout his home every day of the year! We will miss his warm, affectionate greetings, “Hey Brother!” “Hey Angel!” followed by a smile that would light up the room. Ernest Jones was a spiritual, loving man, so grateful to God for his many blessings. Always a treasure to his family and friends, he will remain forever in our hearts.
A memorial mass to celebrate the life of Ernest H. Jones will be scheduled for a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 55 W. Wacker Drive, Suite 1150, Chicago, IL 60601, 1-800-LUNGUSA or at https://www.lung.org.

Pop, you are the man I’ve looked up to all my life. It has been my greatest privilege to be your son, to take care of you and to be there for you always, whenever you needed me. You have always been my hero and true example of what a man should be. I know you are now at rest, without pain, no doubt sharing a heavenly cup of coffee with our family of angels above, maybe even enjoying a hot dog or two. Know that you will be in my heart forever. Rest safely in the arms of our Lord, Dad. I will love you always! Your loving son, Rodney
Pop, I could never begin to thank you enough for being such a wonderful, amazing father in law to me. I lost my dad 19 years ago and my mom last year, and you helped fill that void for me over the years, in so many ways, you’ll never know. I will miss sitting outside with you, day after day, taking in the fresh air, watching the birds and deer play, listening to your fabulous stories, refilling your coffee cup, and listening to Elvis and classic country music playing loud and proud! I thank God my memories with you are so beautiful and endless. Thank you for the blessing of your son, Rodney Jones, the great love of my life. Give the family big hugs from all of us and please, tell Elvis that I was his biggest fan (next to you!) Rest peacefully, Pop, and know that this world was a better place because of you! Love always, Christine
Uncle Ernest, your obituary couldn’t have said it any better, you absolutely lit up a room with your contagious smile. You were the BEST uncle, hands down! A family man showing unconditional love to everyone. I never told you this, but whenever I missed Dad, you were my go-to person, from a visit or a phone call you always made things better. I have so many great memories of you that I will forever cherish, coming to the house on Friday nights, your annual cook-outs with the delicious bbq hotdogs (they were my favorite) and of course your country music, Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton, every time I hear them I immediately think of you. I always said “If that tree could talk” and anyone in the family reading this knows exactly what tree I’m talking about 🙂 Oh, the memories!! Thank you God for such a wonderful, amazing man that will sorely be missed and will always and forever hold a special place in my heart.
Rest in Peace Uncle Ernest. Love you, Rose
Uncle Ernest You will be missed so much! I can still remember the first time I met you with Uncle Buddy at the farm. You welcomed me into your family and heart then and forever. Your “Hey Angel” and your smile warmed my heart! You always asked how my mom and dad were doing. You made dear friends with them when you painted at their house. Wayne loved visiting with you. You and him had a special bond and have many cherished memories. Your visits to Sneade’s to shop and see Wayne made his day! Kevin has many fond memories of your picnics and being able to see and play with his cousins. We were so blessed to have you in our lives. Thank you for being a great man, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend! You are our angel!
Uncle Ernie. You are the best uncle any niece could be blessed to call her uncle. I loved sitting with you and listening to the stories of you and dad growing up. I know you two were best friends and now you are back together. Hug and kiss mom and dad for me because I know you are all together and in peace. I will miss you greatly but I have plenty of memories to remember. Love you bunches Uncle Ernie. ❤️
First and foremost, I would like to thank Rodney, his wife Chris, and son Justin for taking care of my favorite uncle.
We knew the day would come and knew God would even call the best home…so now Uncle Ernie has gone home. He is now laughing among his brothers and sisters who went before him. I will miss you dearly Uncle Ernie, but I will always have great memories. The only time I saw you angry, was when you were mad at the push mower and slammed it against the tree. I remember the wild nights at Town Creek Marina, when we had to throw down; all the burgers, hard crabs and beer we had under the old tree. But most of all, I want to thank you for all you did for my father, mother and all of us kids. I love you Uncle Ernie and miss you. Thank you for all the fun, help, and laughter; and for just being a great role-model. I will miss that smile you always had, your work here is done, so now rest your soul.
Until we meet again with love always,
Billy
Rodney,
To you, Christine, family members I do know, Jerry and Ruth Ann and to the family members I do not, I offer my personal condolences to all. I would also bring the thoughts and prayers of your “other family” at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, where you serve so proudly as the Deputy Director. When you called to tell me your Dad had passed, I heard the toll his passing had taken in your voice. I know he was with you and Christine and so know the care he was given throughout.
Not knowing your Dad personally, I feel as though I know him through you. Whether it was his quote or simply borrowed, “A man should work every day, no matter what”, is alive in you. He passed that trait, as well as many others, on to you, as well as Tony and Garth I am sure.
As I told you when you called and since then, whatever you or the family needs, all that is necessary is for you to advise me and it shall be arranged.
Personally and on behalf of Sharon and your co-workers at Charlotte Hall, I pass on the condolences of the other four Directors and Deputy Secretary Finn as well. May your Dad, Ernest Howard Jones, eternally Rest in Peace. g.owings
My heart is broken in a million pieces. I know you were tired and ready to go home with the Lord. You were always a wonderful and loving brother. I will forever cherish all our precious memories we shared. I love and miss you so much. You will be in my heart forever. Thanks for always being there for me. I will see you on the other side. What a day that will be. RIP ! ❤️❤️❤️🤨🤪 Love, Charlie and Sissy
Another great man has left his earthly home and has entered into the gates of heaven. You were always smiling when ever I saw you and always had a kind word to say. My brother Lee loved and adored you and followed in your foot steps in the painting world. Give Lee a hug for me and love to my mama. Tell uncle Claude that he is missed daily. You will be missed but your smile will forever be in my heart. Love you the littlest Smith girl. Bonnie

So sorry to hear of Ernest’s passing. We worked together many years ago at my Uncle Bud’s gas station. He was always a pleasant a cheerful man. Enjoyed those many nights at the station. He will be greatly missed.
