Ellen Genet Peery Hultberg, 96, of West River, Maryland, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2026. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend and teacher and she will be deeply missed.
Ellen was born on June 8, 1930 to Robert and Flora Peery. She was raised in War, West Virginia and had three older siblings. She was married twice; first to John Skleplovich – father of Gary and Sue and then after John’s passing to Richard “Dick” Hultberg – father of Rich and Mark. She was mother of 4, grandmother to 9, great-grandmother to 10, with her first great-great-grandchild on the way. She raised her children in New Carrollton, Maryland and then when Dick retired, they moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Her family was her most cherished thing. She loved any chance for the family to all get together for Christmas, weddings, reunions, etc., and you can be sure wherever she was she could light up a room with her beautiful smile! She was very social and enjoyed talking with everyone. If you were a close friend of one of her children, you were family too. To the spouses of her children she wasn’t just your mother-in-law, she was Mom! She rarely ever just said hello. She usually gave a big HEY! along with a smile to greet those she met.
She loved to cook and try out new recipes, and her catalog of old recipes was beyond compare. When she and Dick would come up from Florida for a visit, she never left without her recipe folder. There was always some special dish that somebody would want her to make. Her pancakes were famous! They were always requested because they were so delicious. She didn’t measure ingredients exactly the way they were listed on a recipe. She said you just had to throw it in until it felt right and if it didn’t work out, you probably weren’t holding your mouth correctly! She also was an avid reader. Books were a big part of her life, and it would be rare to not find her reading the newest romance novel.
She dedicated her life to teaching. She taught school for so long she was tenured both in Maryland and Florida. She had a lot of stories about going to see a doctor or some other professional, only to find out that she taught them in the first grade. They always remembered her and would usually tell her she was their favorite teacher.
Ellen was preceded in death by both of her beloved husbands and son Gary, as well as her parents and siblings. She is survived by her children: daughter Sue Osborne (Mark) of West River, MD; sons Richard Hultberg III (Kim) of Forest Hill, MD and Mark Hultberg (Carla) of West River, MD; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Whether you knew her as Mom, Grandma, Mawnaw, Aunt Ellen, Aunt Einey, or just Mrs. Hultberg, she touched many lives and will be sadly missed. Her memory will live on through the love she shared with the family she cherished and the lasting impact of her years as an educator.
