Dr. Mark R. Frazer, D.D.S.

Dr. Mark R. Frazer, a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and cherished member of the Calvert County community, passed away on February 4, 2025, at the age of 84. A man of distinction, kindness, and unwavering dedication, he left behind a legacy of service, leadership, and compassion that touched the lives of many. His remarkable career spanned over five decades as a highly respected dentist and a dedicated public servant.

Dr. Frazer demonstrated leadership from an early age. Growing up in Washington, D.C., he was elected President of the Sousa Junior High School Class of 1955 and later served as President of the Anacostia High School Class of 1958. In 1962, he became President of his fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta, before graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Richmond with a degree in biology. He went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree Cum Laude from Georgetown University School of Dentistry. A member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Alpha Sigma Nu, he was also honored with the John P. Burke Memorial Award for Excellence in Restorative Dentistry.

Following a one-year internship and two years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force Dental Corps, where he achieved the rank of Captain, Dr. Frazer entered private practice in Prince Frederick, Maryland. He faithfully served the dental community through leadership roles, including President of both the Southern Maryland Dental Study Club and the Academy of General Dentistry Annapolis Chapter. He also chaired numerous committees within the Maryland State Dental Association and the Southern Maryland Dental Society, making a lasting impact on the profession. Dr. Frazer was especially proud of his appointment by Governor Harry Hughes to serve on the Maryland Dental Board of Examiners from 1979 to 1987.

Beyond his dental career, Dr. Frazer was a dedicated public servant. He was elected to the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners in 1986, later serving as Vice President of the board. He was re-elected to a second term on the Board of County Commissioners in 1994. His passion for civic engagement continued when he became Mayor of the Town of North Beach in 1998, serving multiple terms until 2018. He served as President of the Maryland Municipal League from 2003 to 2004, reflecting his commitment to statewide leadership. His tenure as mayor was marked by a steadfast commitment to revitalizing the town and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

In addition to his professional and political accomplishments, Dr. Frazer was deeply involved in charitable and civic organizations. He served on the Administrative Board of Huntingtown United Methodist Church, the Board of Directors for the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department, Calvert Memorial Hospital, the Calvert County Nursing Center, and the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce. He served as Vice President of the Board of Directors of Calvert Adult Day Care, Inc., President of the Calvert Hospice Advisory Council, a member of the Calvert County Christmas in April Board of Directors, and a member of the board of Friends of Calvert Hospice. He served as a member of the State of Maryland Judicial Nominations Commission for Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties and as a commissioner on the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Dr. Frazer most recently assisted the Calvert County Library Foundation Board in a fundraising campaign for their new branch in North Beach.

Above all, Dr. Frazer was a loving and devoted family man. He found immense joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren, always offering a kind word, a warm smile, and his ever-present humble spirit. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Mattingly Frazer, whom he cared for with unwavering devotion during her battle with cancer.

Dr. Frazer is survived by his children, Suzanne (Charles) Hardisty of North Beach, Linden (John) Re of Averill Park, NY, and David (Terri) Frazer of Raleigh, NC; his grandchildren, Sean, Kayla, Rebecca, Delany, Michael, Duncan, Marley, Lily, and Ellie; and his siblings, Duncan (Mickie) Frazer and Sally Klein.

Services will be held at Rausch Funeral Home in Owings, MD, on Sunday, February 9, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department in Chesapeake Beach, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, in honor of the compassionate care provided to his late wife.

Dr. Frazer will be remembered as a distinguished leader, a dedicated friend and advocate, and above all, a kind and stellar human being whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

March 7 – Obituary: Dr. Mark R. Frazer

Mark was my dentist, definitely of choice! But he eventually couldn’t accept my Federal Insurance plan (I couldn’t blame him for all the paperwork was worse) and I stumbled off to other truly lesser dentists, and still must do so!

I had one big dental repair and though it cost thousands, I went to Mark and he did it, flawlessly. We met several times, always the gentleman and Nancy and I were always remembered. Once while he was Mayor, I cornered him and said: “y’know those teeth you did for me? Perfect job. I expect to have ’em the rest of my life” He looked at me, a little surprised and said “you expected otherwise, Kent ???”

Well, they’re still perfect as I close in on my 87th Birthday this summer. Such a fine, cordial and solid man. The Obituary and articles lauding him seem to indicate his lovely wife pre-deceased him. How painful that could have been and it seems his end was with Hospice, and discomfort his daughter lamented. I trust the wounds will heal for you and your daughter and that you Dad’s strength and decency will continue powering you for many more decades. I value having known him and considered him a friend.

My sincere condolences to Dr. Frazer’s family. He was an outstanding dentist and public servant. Our family was amongst his very first patients when he began his practice in the house in Huntingtown so many years ago. His dedicated public service to both Calvert County and North Beach greatly benefitted both. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by many with gratitude and respect.

You were always there for Twin Beach Players. We came so close to having a theatre in the town through your guidance. You realized more than most that organizations were needed for children that weren’t sports freaks. Thank you so much for the Boys and Girls Club of Southern MD. Your support was the springboard for Ms Hill to reestablish the clubs back into southern MD.
Thank you for all the shows you attended. It was always a comfort to have you in our audience. Thanks for supporting young playwrites through the Kids Playwriting Festival of the Youth Troupe.
I enjoyed so much our meetings in your office and our walks through the town. You and Mary helped Twin Beach Players make a spot on the map and you were the guy that helped foster the relationship between The Boys & Girls Clubs and Twin Beach Players.
Your leadership will be missed.
Thank you, Mark

February 9 – Obituary: Dr. Mark R. Frazer

My sincere condolences to the entire family and friends of Mark’s. I had the pleasure of working with Mark for over 20 years. Always a fair employer and along the years, my family members became patients and friends as well. Great respect for this man and I wish I had been well enough to see him this past Christmas. I felt so honored to be invited to the office Christmas gathering even though I’ve been retired for about 3-4 years. We would text about Mary and how my path through cancer was similar to hers. Mark always had encouraging words for me and I always appreciated that. I am sad that I cannot attend the services today as I am just out of ICU hospital. Hello and condolences to my fellow Averill Park NY residents in the Frazer family. (Lived there for my beginning years before moving to MD.) I will miss you Mark as will so many people. I hope you are at peace and with your family.

Mark & I always joked that we grew old together. Forty years of being his patient. Forty years we shared life events. He was the most gentle dentist and the only one I never minded getting shots from. He will be missed.

February 7 – Obituary: Dr. Mark R. Frazer

The community has suffered a substantial loss with the passing of Dr. Frazer. He was my Dentist for 20+ years and I considered him a friend. He was so gracious and kind to me as someone who is terrified of dental work. He made sure I received the best treatment, and I was saddened when he retired; but always still saw him around the office. I could never thank Dr. Frazer for all the kindness and care he showed me all these years. He was such a kind soul, and I will never forget him. Many condolences to his family.

February 7 – Obituary: Dr. Mark R. Frazer

We have known and respected Mark for decades, from our early friendship in the 70s. He and Duncan were our family dentists for 50 some years, and Mark was instrumental in us opening The Westlawn Inn as he stewarded in the rejuvenation of North Beach in his first set of terms. He was a people first Commissioner whose service to our county can’t be overstated. Most precious, though, are our memories of the “Cigar Club” days on the back porch of The Westlawn, discussing every topic under the sun. Our condolences to his family. RIP, friend.

February 6 – Obituary: Dr. Mark R. Frazer

Dr. Frazer’s father was my first dentist when I was a little boy. I was introduced to the Frazer’s by my best friend’s mother Mrs. Barbara Sanderson who worked for them for many years. By High School I was going to Dr. Mark Frazer and later Duncan for the majority of my dental needs. I will always remember Dr. Frazer as a kind, talented and caring dentist and as a man who was devoted to helping people with all the myriad problems we can encounter in our lives. It is people like Dr. Frazer who give you hope in life and hope in the goodness of human kind.
