Dorothy Vivian “Dottie” McKenzie-Hyde
May 28, 1943 – August 14, 2024
Dorothy V. “Dottie” McKenzie-Hyde, 81, of Shady Side, MD passed away on August 14, 2024, at her home in Shadyside, MD leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth and cherished memories with her family and friends. Dottie was born May 28, 1943 in Deale to Luther L. “Captain Roy” Ward and Alice (Casey) Ward. Dottie graduated from Southern High School in 1961 and then went on to marry H. Fred McKenzie Sr.
As a lifelong resident of Deale, she enjoyed working in the family restaurant of Happy Harbor and later at Captain Jimmy’s. When she went to work at 7-11, she found that she enjoyed the customers and the daily interaction with all her “7-11 family and friends”, and it became something that she loved. Her 7-11 family would start their day with a cup of coffee, smile, and hug from “Ms. Dottie”. She was the epitome of being “dependable” and some would say a “South County Legend” who will be missed by all. She was a lifetime member of The Deale Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the Moose Lodge and the Deale Elks. She was a devoted Redskins fan, (do not tell her they are The Commander’s, she will tell you what she thinks of “all that”). She enjoyed playing bingo, the lottery, scratch-off tickets, and her dinners at Happy Harbor, The Deale Elks and The Moose Lodge. She had a special bond with her cat, “Boots.” But most of all she loved her children and grandchildren. Her gentle spirit and the simple pleasures she cherished will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Dottie’s husband H. Fred McKenzie Sr passed away January 4, 1985, and Dottie later married Jon Hyde on September 9, 1999. Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, husbands H. Fred McKenzie Sr. and Jon Hyde, her daughter Linda McKenzie, and her sister Irene Shymansky. She is survived by her daughters Deborah Miller and husband Doug Miller of Texas, Donna Koehler and husband Marty Koehler of Florida; son H. Fred (Freddie) McKenzie Jr. of Deale, MD, Jean McKenzie (her niece she raised as her own) of Huntingtown, MD, her grandchildren, Ryan Osborn and wife Lindsey, Krista Trimboli and husband Stephen, Tyler Osborn and wife Kelsea, Victoria Blackburn and husband Josh, Tyler Eberly, Kalie Eberly, Cameron Miller and wife Sydney Miller, Courtney Miller, Johnny Letcher, Alicia Beavers, Joey Brashears and Skye McKenzie, and great grandchildren, Brody, Cayson, Dawsyn, Ellie, Tinsley, Lucas, Ryder, Luca, Benjamin, and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday August 20th, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Rausch Funeral Home at 8325 Mt. Harmony Lane, Owings, MD. A celebration of Dottie’s life will be held on Wednesday August 21 at 11:00 AM at Cedar Grove Methodist Church in Deale, MD. Interment will immediately follow at Cedar Bluff Cemetery in Annapolis. Following the interment, the family would like to invite everyone to the Deale Elks Lodge at 3:00 PM for food and refreshments.
