Dorothy Virginia Byers, affectionately known as Dottie and Tug, age 87, of Lusby, MD, formerly of Huntingtown, MD, passed away peacefully at her residence on January 11, 2026.

Dorothy was born on June 27, 1938, in Washington, DC, to the late Virginia Dorothy (Redding) Curtis and Alvin Triplett Curtis, II. She was the beloved wife of James H. Byers, whom she married on November 19, 1959, in Mount Rainier, MD. Together they shared many devoted years of marriage until his passing on July 28, 2021.

Dorothy graduated from Suitland High School in 1956. She began her career at Acacia Insurance Company in Washington, DC, and later worked for S.C. Johnson Wax, Inc. in Jessup, Maryland, where she retired. Not one to sit still, she later enjoyed working at Side Track Hobbies in Leonardtown, MD. In 1985, she moved to Calvert County from Millersville, MD, where she made her home for many years.

Dorothy had a deep love for traveling and camping, and she especially enjoyed crocheting blankets, reading, doing word searches, and watching Hallmark movies. She will be remembered for her warmth, devotion to family, and the quiet joy she found in life’s simple pleasures.

She is survived by her loving children, John M. Byers (Terri) of Morristown, MN, and Joseph P. Byers (Karen) of Brandywine, MD; her siblings, Alvin T. Curtis III, Robert G. Curtis (Eileen) of Nathalie, VA, Ann M. Shipman (Ralph) of Huntingtown, MD, and Michael D. Curtis (Kathy) of Huntingtown, MD; her grandchildren, Lynnae A. Lukes (Marcus) of Elysian, MN, Shannon N. Capozzi (Anthony) of Evans, GA, and Anthony T. J. Elkins Jr. (Marian) of Brandywine, MD; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Avery Breyer, Payton Schrot, Oakley Lukes, Sunny Lukes, Mason Lukes, Adley Simmons, Vincent Capozzi, Luca Capozzi, Hannah Elkins, and Patrick Elkins.

In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, James Michael Byers.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Rausch Funeral Home, 20 American Lane, Lusby, Maryland, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Chaplain Bill Miller. Interment will follow at Southern Memorial Gardens in Dunkirk, Maryland.
