Doris Frances Sheleheda, 82 of Lusby, Maryland, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.
Doris Frances “Dot” Sheleheda (née Johanson) was born May 2, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1998, she and her beloved husband William “Bill” Sheleheda settled in Southern Maryland to be close to family in retirement. Due to Bill’s career, they previously lived in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Illinois and she made many lifelong friends wherever she went.
Dot was a member of Our Lady Star of The Sea Catholic Church in Solomons, Maryland, and often supported their functions and those for the Catholic School. She always greeted everyone with a warm smile, a cheerful “Hi,” and an encouraging word. Dot was known for striking up conversations with strangers —whether in the grocery store or around town— and turning them into lifelong friendships. To know her was truly to love her.
A loving homemaker and talented craftswoman, Dot expressed her love through her many hobbies and interests. She delighted in baking and cooking for family and friends, hosting holiday meals, and enjoying Maryland crabs with her family. She poured her creativity into sewing projects including special blankets, bedspreads, and even complex mending, on which she often tucked special heart-felt personal tag inserts. Dot invested many days in cross stitching and needlepointing family Christmas stockings and wall art. She also made latch hook rugs. Dot had a special love for animals, especially her Maltese “little white dogs,” including her faithful companion Ace, who rarely left her side.
Dot was especially proud to be an American. She always supported our military and first responders and looked forward each year to celebrating America’s birthday with her husband and family, creating special memories filled with “flag shirts,” and an abundance of love and gratitude.
In 1973, after the death of her first husband, Ronald “David” Pucciarella, Dot bravely raised her two young sons David Jr. and Anthony Pucciarella, as a single mother in Baltimore. While rebuilding her life and employed at Sears along with her eldest sister Mary and other family, she met Bill, the man with whom she would spend the rest of her earthly years. Through her marriage to Bill, she became a loving mother to his daughter, Beth McClenahan.
Dot cherished her role as “Gammy” and “Grandmom” to her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Nothing made her happier than gathering her family together.
Dot and Bill spent much of their time enjoying each other’s company, watching the wildlife around their home, tending the flowers in their garden, and hosting family events. In 2024, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and renewed their vows at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Dot was a devout Catholic who attended Mass every week and enjoyed maintaining religious holiday and cooking traditions. She joyfully made holiday treats including her family’s Italian Pizzelles as well as Ukrainian foods and breads, which were passed down from Bill’s parents.
She is survived by her loving husband William “Bill” Sheleheda; her sons, David R. Pucciarella Jr. (and wife Sherry) and Commander Anthony J. Pucciarella, USN (Ret) (and wife Suzanne); her daughter Beth McClenahan; her sister Mary Sullivan; grandchildren, David Pucciarella III, Michael Pucciarella (and wife Melissa), Katlyn Pucciarella, Evan Pucciarella, Cameron McClenahan, Madison McClenahan, and Annalia Pucciarella; and her great-grandchildren Kinsley Handley, Harper Pucciarella, and Max Pucciarella; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Ronald David Pucciarella; her mother, Ethel Johanson; sisters, Patricia Crumley and Helen Hoover; and her in-laws, Joseph and Stella Sheleheda, Joseph and Susan Pucciarella, and Patrick Sullivan (husband of Dot’s sister Mary), who passed away just days after Dot.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dot’s devoted friends and the special caregivers who lovingly tended to her needs over the past few months. Many were deeply touched by her resilience, warmth, and unwavering spirit, and often told her they loved her before leaving her side.
Visitation will be held at Rausch Funeral Home in Lusby, Maryland, on March 8th from 2:30- 4:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on March 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Solomons, Maryland, with interment immediately following at St. John Vianney Parish Cemetery, Prince Frederick, Maryland.

Dot (or Doris as I sometimes called her) was always my best friend. She was also my guardian angel who looked after me. Dot was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and “Gammy.” She was so sweet and caring to all of her friends – including people she met for the first time in line at the grocery store.
She was simply God’s good messenger.
Dot passed away at 1:38 p,m, on that Wednesday afternoon and I believe at that exact time she was at the side of our Savior.
I loved her more than I can possibly say and I will miss her everyday until we meet again.
With Love,
Mary (Dot’s sister)

Aunt Dot was more like a “Older Sister” to me. Some of my first memories was her looking like a princess when she married my Uncle Butch. Secondly, when I was about 7 she helped us name all the 101 Dalmations for a local contest. We had many memorable family dinners when we all lived at my grandparents house while our houses were being built. When my uncle passed I thought she would never be the same, but she defied odds and fought her way back. When she met Bill, her Smile returned and we all gained a wonderful new family member. Although, they moved away she never forgot about us. Her constant love of family held us together. I am so very thankful I had her in my life. I am very Grateful we got to visit a few times in the past several months. Thank you Bill for being her “knight in shining armor”. Know you are loved also and we pray for strength to get through the hard times ahead.

Dot was such a lovely lady and a pure joy to be around. Although we only knew her in her later years, it was obvious that she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her greatest legacy is her family. She was truly blessed, deeply loved and now forever in the loving arms of our savior, Jesus Christ.

When I was 6 years old, my Dad married Dot, and blessed me with a Bonus Mom and 2 brothers. From that day on, she became an important part of my life.
Dot taught me so much over the years. She shared her time, her patience, and so many little things that became big memories. She’s the one who taught me to love Mexican food, how to make amazing nachos, and how to create things like cross-stitching, macramé, and so much more…
But more than the things she taught me, she gave me love, laughter, and a lifetime of memories I will always treasure.
With her loss, my heart will never be the same. I’m so grateful for the years we had with her and for everything she poured into my life and everyone around her.
Rest peacefully, Dot. Thank you for being such a beautiful part of my story. You will always be loved and missed.

Bill,
I am very sorry to hear of Dot’s passing but she is without pain and cherished in the hands of God. She was a mentor for me when I first moved to Libertyville and knew no one. We would go to lunch or to the mall for a little shopping. She tried to get me interested in cooking and hobbies, cross stich and sewing. I just didn’t have her passion or ability.
Once I really got to know her, she told me of her young life and I was so proud to see how her strength and conviction helped her find a new and better life. I am glad she found you and together you were able to have a good marriage.
I fee so bad that she had to suffer so much due to a medical mistake. You both went through a lot during this time and I am thankful she had you. You mentioned in one of your notes that she was in good spirits and I admire her for that. I hope the hospice care was good and was able to provide some relief for the pain.
Dan and I will keep both you and Dot in our prayers and I will continue to light a candle for her when I go to Mass. I have a cross stich picture and a Christmas banner from her that will continue to remind me of her.
God Bless you and your family!

Dot was truly one of the most beautiful souls I have ever met, both inside and out! She had such a beautiful heart and I’m honored to have known her. I also loved seeing the beautiful relationship that her and Bill had. God truly knew what he was doing bringing them together and Bill can take comfort in knowing how she felt so deeply loved and taken care of by him. I’ll miss you Dot!

My mother has known Dotsy since they were children. They have been friends for a VERY long time. My mom has been down for several years but always asks me what is on Dotsy’s FB page. She has been able to speak with her but it has been a year or just before Miss Dot became sick. She sends her love and condolence for the entire family.
