Doris Evelyn McMichael

Doris Evelyn McMichael, 90, of North Beach, passed away peacefully at home on August 11, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Doris was born on November 11, 1935, in Washington, D.C., to William Hamilton Davis and Evelyn Rose (Bates) Davis. She grew up in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Anacostia High School.

On February 26, 1956, Doris married the love of her life, Warren Daniel McMichael. Together, they built a life centered around family, hard work, and love. They first lived in Dover, Delaware, while Warren was stationed at Dover Air Force Base, and later made their homes in Congress Heights, Oxon Hill, Fort Washington, and Alexandria, Virginia, before settling in Rose Haven in 1999.

After graduating from high school, Doris worked at the Pentagon. She later joined Warren in starting McMichael School Bus Service, which they owned and operated together until the mid-1980s. Doris then began a career with the Department of Transportation, where she worked as a benefits coordinator until retiring after many years of dedicated service. Never one to sit still for long, Doris later worked at the Herrington Harbour pool, where she enjoyed being part of the community.

Doris was a devoted member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Dorcas Lydia Circle. She was also very involved with the Rose Haven Civic Association and was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Above all else, Doris loved her family. Some of her greatest joys came from simply being surrounded by the people she loved, whether at family gatherings, around the dinner table, or spending time together at home. Doris was almost always smiling, and one of the first things people noticed about her was her beautiful blue eyes. She had a warmth about her and a special way of making those around her feel loved, cared for, and always welcome.

Doris also enjoyed the little pleasures in life: chocolate, music, and, of course, her 6:00 p.m. glass of Merlot.

Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Warren Daniel McMichael; her son, Jeffrey McMichael; and her grandchildren, Brian Middledorf, Angela McMichael, and Mathew McMichael.

She is survived by her children, Debbie Colbert (Rick) of North Beach, Diana Middledorf (Cris) of Dunkirk, Kenneth McMichael (Cyndy) of Lusby, Beth McMichael of North Beach, and Joe McMichael (Belinda) of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, as well as her 39 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Doris leaves behind a family who loved her deeply and a lifetime of memories that will continue to be cherished for generations to come.

Doris loved flowers, and they are warmly welcomed. For those who would prefer to make a memorial donation, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake or Friendship United Methodist Church, both of which held a special place in her heart.
