Donald Chester Ward
May 5, 1937 – August 10, 2023
Donald Chester Ward, 86, of Tracys Landing, Maryland, passed away on August 10, 2023, surrounded by family.
Donald was born on May 5, 1937, to Chester and Mildred Ward in Paris, Maryland. He graduated from Calvert High School in 1955 then married Iva Gene, the love of his life, in 1960. Together they made Tracys Landing, Maryland, their home for nearly 63 years.
Donald is survived by his wife, Iva Gene, and his three children: son – Dennis Ward and wife Beth, son – Douglas Ward and wife Sharon, and daughter – Donna Swann and husband Jody; as well as eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Donald is also survived by his sister, Peggy Wilkerson and her husband John.
Donald worked various jobs before beginning his 28-year career as manager at the Anne Arundel Courthouse. He later worked as an equipment operator for Anne Arundel County Highways. Throughout most of his life, he farmed and did construction jobs.
Donald loved life to the fullest. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends, including bus trips and cruises. His sense of humor always brought joy and laughter to their adventures.
Donald had a passion for sports, playing both soccer and baseball in high school. Later, he played fastpitch softball for several teams, including Middletown’s Tavern and Graul’s Foodland. He then picked up the sport of slow-pitch softball, playing for Tracys, Seaside Electric, and Wayson’s teams. After retirement of his playing days, he continued his love of sports by promoting youth recreation and playing a large role in the creation of Tracys Park. He was the co-founder of the United Youth Club, the first youth sports club for southern Anne Arundel County. Donald’s love of sports continued through coaching and supporting his 3 kids in various sports. He rarely missed a game, from their youth rec leagues through their college athletic careers. He was the assistant coach of Wayson’s men softball team which won various tournaments, including the 1987 National Championship.
Donald was a dedicated husband and father, but the true joy of his life was being a Pop Pop to his 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He loved them with all of his heart and would frequently be found attending their games or helping with projects. There was not a thing he wouldn’t do to make their lives special.

I have very fond memories of the Ward family. Special people. My children grew up with the Ward children and Donald and Iva Jean always welcomed Tony and Robin in their home. (A second home for Robin) Thanks for the rides for Tony to football practice and being faithful fans for all sports. Rest in peace Donald. You lived an exemplary life. My sincere condolences to Iva Jean, Dennis Donna and Doug
I was so sorry to hear this on Thursday, Donald was a sweetheart – loved going to the Nats games with my parents and would whisper in my ear at Church that anytime I got my hands on some tickets to not forget him!! He will surely be missed by all, but I know that he and our parents are up there talking about the Commanders and Nats right now!!! So sorry we will miss his celebration of life this weekend – hugs to all of you.
Love, Leisha, Ronny, Paula and kids.
