Charles Lynn Kaltwasser
August 3, 1956 – January 4, 2023
Charles Lynn Kaltwasser, aka “Dutch”, 66 of Lusby, MD, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2023, following complications from an aortic valve replacement, at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., with his beloved wife of 37 years, Sharon, and his children, Stephen and Timothy, along with his pastor, by his side.
The “dash between the dates” on a tombstone is said to represent what makes up a persons life. His dash began in Butler, PA in August of 1956 when he was born to C. Ted and Janet Kaltwasser. His activities included church, church youth group (cross country bus trips!) and baseball leagues. He was a Cub Scout, and then a Boy Scout (Life). He truly enjoyed going to camp Lutherlyn in Prospect, PA, as a youth and later returning while in high school to work during summers, it was during one of these summers where he was given the nickname “Dutch”. He loved camping, being in the outdoors, white water rafting, kayaking and rock climbing. He was active in the Freeport Area High School band, chorus and musicals. His work behind the scenes of the musicals earned him the nickname “Catwalk”. He attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and earned degrees in Business Management and in Accounting. While at IUP he ran white water on the Cheat River in WV and ran a successful DJ business, The Dutchman. He was a charter member of Zeta Pi chapter of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and continued to support the chapter after graduation by serving on the House Corporation Board. He met Sharon at IUP in 1981 and the two began to date and meet one another’s families. He moved for jobs but the two continued the relationship via phone calls, hand-written letters and cards, visiting in person as time allowed. His job pursuits brought him to Southern Maryland to work, and after Sharon accepted a teaching job in Southern MD in July of 1985, a date was set for that fall. He often quipped that the short timeline meant she couldn’t change her mind on any wedding arrangements. The “he and she” became “we” on November 30 of that year, in a tiny 100 year old church on a remote windswept hillside in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The two set up housekeeping in Cove Point Beach, a community near Lusby, MD. They began attending Trinity Lutheran Church in Lexington Park where teaching Sunday School and leading Sunday School music allowed both to continue their faith journeys together. He served the Cove Point Beach Association on the board of directors and as president of the association for many years. The early 1990’s brought sons Stephen and Tim to the family. Lynn loved being a dad and enjoyed sharing experiences with the boys, including active church involvement, Sunday School, gardening, white water rafting, rock climbing, scuba diving, and of course, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He became a scout leader to pay forward what Scouting had given him as a youth. He served as an Assistant Den Leader, and Pack Committee Chair for Pack 451, and when the boys moved to Boy Scouts, he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster and later as Scout Master for Troop 407. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He also served in multiple capacities at the district (Western Shores) level as Cub Scout Roundtable Chair and then as Boy Scout Roundtable Chair for many years. He served on several council level committees including: Shooting Sports, COPE and Climbing, and ran COPE and Climbing courses and shooting sports ranges for various Cub Scout and Boy Scout events with both Western Shores District, National Capital Area Council, and also for scout camps in Pennsylvania and Goshen, VA. He continued to run white water when he could and was delighted when Stephen joined him on the river. He became scuba certified and he and Tim enjoyed many scuba trips. He became friends with a scouter who ran CPR/First Aid classes for Scouters needing those skills to pursue high adventure scouting trips. He added, “Become a Red Cross certified First Aid/AED/CPR instructor” to his bucket list and managed to achieve not only that goal, but to also add Wilderness First Responder to the list of things he could teach. He was a blood donor (22 gallons at last count!) and an organ donor. He was proud to be awarded a Silver Beaver Award from the National Capital Area Council of Boy Scouts of America and was named as the Distinguished Scouter for Western Shores District of Boy Scouts of America. His mission in all that he did with Scouting was to help youth grow into adults who were prepared to be good citizens, love and respect the outdoors and take care of others. He was active in church, sharing his musical talents as a worship assistant, choir member, youth/Special Education Sunday School music co-leader. He served as an elder, and on Parish Planning Committee. Attending church and partaking of communion as a family were important to Lynn. Returning to (camp) Lutherlyn as an adult over many summers to volunteer with Model Railroad Camp while the boys attended camp brought back many fond memories of his time there as a camper. He was excited to learn that he would be a grandpa when Stephen and daughter in law Linda announced that they were expecting. CoVid or no CoVid, trips were made to Idaho to spend time with granddaughter Mayli. Being a grandfather brought him great joy and he held her every chance he could get during visits, it was easy to see that she loved him too. In between all of his activities he found time to be the longest-serving employee in the Technology Services Division of Calvert County Government. He enjoyed the problem-solving that came with his job as a systems analyst and was quite good at it. His passing leaves a huge hole for not only the family but also for the many whose lives he touched … but we take comfort in knowing that many of those lives he touched, continue to touch the lives of others and his legacy goes on. If you would honor his memory – go donate blood, sign an organ donor card and tell your family you want to donate organs upon your passing. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Lutherlyn, POB 355, Prospect, PA 16052, or online at https://www.lutherlyn.com/support/donate/donate.html Viewing at Rausch Funeral Home, 20 American Lane, Lusby, MD on Sunday, January 15, 2023 from 1:30 to 4 pm. We have many fond memories of Lynn and the entire Kaltwasser family. My oldest son Scott played soccer with the boys at CSA, and my second youngest son Joshua was in Boy Scouts at St Pauls UMC where we saw Lynn regularly. He was blessed with such a fine family and many friends.
We are saddened by your loss. His legacy is large and one to be proud of.

Dear Sharon and family,
We were shocked to learn about Lynn. He was always a great neighbor at the Cove. We remember many times of him helping others….too numerous to mention! Jeff remembers one of his conversations last year when he said, “I’m going to retire this year (2023). ” We are in Florida and will not attend the services. Our prayers are with you all and always.

I am so sorry to see this— good memories of him as he was Boy Scout Leader at Waters Memorial UMC. God’s peace to you, Sharon and your family.
I sent my heart felt condolences to his family. I knew Lynn since childhood through high school. I just recently found off his passing and I was not expecting this news. He will be missed greatly.
