Carl Hock Search
May 4, 1923 – March 8, 2023
Carl Hock Search, 99, departed from this life on March 8, 2023. Carl was born in Newark, New Jersey on May 4, 1923. He was the second son of the late Fred G. and Gertrude H. Search, joining older brother F. Edgar Search. He was a graduate of Weequahic High School and Cornell University, where he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering. It was during his time at Cornell that he met his beloved wife, fellow Cornell student, Jean Elizabeth Boyd of Middletown, New York. They were married June 4, 1948 by Rev. Harry Dunning, uncle of the bride, at _Middletown Presbyterian Church. In between their meeting and marriage, Carl was deployed to the Pacific Theater during World War II with the US Navy. He served as ship’s engineer and retired from the service as a Lieutenant JG. After their marriage, Jean & Carl settled first in Dunellen, New Jersey, where Carl was employed as an engineer at Art Color Printing Company. It was there that they raised their three children. In the 1970s, Jean and Carl moved to Severna Park, Maryland and then to Charlottesville, Virginia as Carl continued his print engineering career. Carl was a proud Rotarian and involved in clubs at each place they lived throughout his long life. As well, in Charlottesville, Carl volunteered with Habitat for Humanity & Meals on Wheels. Being of service to others meant a great deal to him. Although he was raised Lutheran, Carl became a Presbyterian upon his marriage; he was an active member of several Presbyterian churches throughout his life. At the time of his death, he was a member of Patuxent Presbyterian Church in California, Maryland. His faith was a source of strength & guidance to him always. Carl’s favorite hobby throughout his life was sailing; the very first “big purchase” he made with his own money as a child during the depression was a small sailboat to use during summers at Morgan Beach, New Jersey. Later on, as he was able to purchase larger & more formidable sailboats, he took great joy in exploring the Chesapeake Bay with friends and family, particularly after retirement. Jean & Carl’s final move was to Solomons, Maryland to be closer to family (as well as closer to the water!). Jean passed on January 13, 2015.
Carl was predeceased by his parents, brother, and sister-in-law. He is survived by his children: Stephen C. Search (LaWahna) of Goshen, New York; Cathy S. Pinkel (Jeff) of California, Maryland; and Donald B. Search (Jackie) of Winchester, Virginia. He is also survived by his many grandsons and only granddaughter: Matthew K. Pinkel (Courtney), Mark J. Pinkel (Danielle), Adam E. Pinkel (Heather), Nathaniel C. Search (Alison), Benjamin G. Search (Molly), Evan B. Search (Diana), Jonathan R. Search (Lexi), and Caroline S. Walls (Morgan). As well, he leaves behind seventeen great-grandchildren. Gifts in his memory can be made to the Samaritan’s Purse. Carl’s legacy of service, civility, humor, and grace under fire in all things will never be forgotten. Matthew 25:23: Well done, good and faithful servant.
