Betty B. Peterkin, 91 of Solomons, MD formerly of Camp Springs, MD passed away on October 23, 2013 at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D. C. She was born on October 28, 1921 in Bloomington, IN to the late Ernest F. Brown and May Cherry Brown. Betty was nutritionist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for over 35 years. She was raised in Rushville, Indiana, a graduate of Purdue University, she moved to the Washington area in 1943. Mrs. Peterkin’s service at USDA was in food and nutrition service and policy development. Her primary research areas were food consumption surveys and dietary guidance development. Prior to retirement in 1987 she acted as Associated Administrator of USDA’s Human Nutrition Information Service. Mrs. Peterkin helped develop and promote the 1985 and 1990 editions of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, statements of nutrition policy in government at the time. She designed a computerized system for the development of a food plan used as a standard for benefits in the USDA’s Food Stamp Program. She was known through her publications and appearances at professional meetings across the country. Following the death of Ernest Peterkin, her husband of 47 years, Mrs. Peterkin moved from their home in Camp Springs, MD. In 1996 she became the first resident of the newly opened Asbury~Solomons Island Retirement Community in Solomons, MD. As a member of the United Methodist Church for all of her adult life, Mrs. Peterkin was a leader in religious education, church financial matters, and youth fellowship. Betty is survived by her sister, Mary Ann Sandleben of Evansville, Indiana, her three daughters, Janet Brock and her husband Raymond, Nancy Supik and her husband Mark and Lucy Peterkin and her husband Donald Eaton, seven grandchildren and many friends.
