Bascombe Gerald “Jerry” Padgett
November 27, 1938 – May 25, 2024
It is with great sadness to announce that Bascombe Gerald “Jerry” Padgett passed away on May 25 after fighting skin cancer for many years. He was a devoted husband to Helen “Marlene” (King) Padgett. He was an amazing father to Michael and Stephen (Kellie) Padgett. Jerry was preceded in death by his eldest son, Christopher Padgett, who passed away in 1996. Jerry leaves behind brother Robert Padgett and he was preceded in death by his sister Kathleen (Padgett) Burnett. Jerry was a very special Pop-Pop to grandchildren Racheal, Haven, Shaylin, Ethan, and Sean.
Jerry was born to Bascombe and Katherine (Wayson) on November 27, 1938 in Washington, DC at Sibley Hospital where Katherine was a nurse. While growing up in Lothian, Maryland, Jerry spent many days at the Wayson family Bingo parlor and related businesses. He grew up playing baseball and was known to be an athlete and practical jokester at Southern High School. After high school, Jerry was a “catcher” for baseball playing for Western Maryland College, the U.S. Army, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) under J. Edgar Hoover’s leadership.
After meeting the beautiful Marlene King at the FBI, he knew she was the woman of his dreams. Shortly afterwards, Jerry and Marlene got married on a very hot day on June 20, 1964 in Lothian, Maryland. They started a family and had three sons – Chris, Mike and Steve. Jerry was very proud of his sons.
Jerry led computer systems at the FBI and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during his federal government career. After retiring from the government, Jerry transformed small businesses into successful, multi-million dollar businesses. Over the years, Jerry mentored and counseled many people with their careers, and his employees appreciated his caring leadership style.
During the last 20 years, Jerry and Marlene lived a sweet life of retirement. They found a lot of pleasure in creating beauty in their home and in their luscious gardens, and traveling to Hawaii to see Mike, Shaylin, and Ethan. Jerry and Marlene would have celebrated 60 years of marriage next month.
Jerry was a friendly guy who liked to chat with strangers, connect with friends, and spend time with his grandchildren. He sure did love his family. Although we knew the end was near, we are all stunned at the enormous loss. We miss you terribly, Pop-Pop.
Condolences

On behalf of our entire Crabtree Family of Greenville, North Carolina we send our love and prayers to all members of the Padgett Family during the loss of their Father, Mr. Jerry Padgett.
Indeed it is difficult when dealing with the passing of a great father and our prayers are for your strength and healing.
We enjoyed reading about your father and his jovial personality that never met a stranger and always connected with others in any type of environment. It gave us great joy in knowing his kindhearted and joyful spirit continues in the Padgett Family.
I personally had the honor of being a teammate of Steve Padgett during our days on the East Carolina University Football Team. I also had the pleasure of living across the street from Steve throughout most of my college years. Just like his father Jerry, Steve was an athlete and competitor at the highest level. Steve was gifted with as much kicking talent as the guys that play on Sunday in the NFL. It was always fun to watch Steve set sail the ball into the endzone and field goals were split down the middle from any angle.
Mr. Jerry Padgett was definitely filled with love of life with being a “Jokester” and the apple does not fall far from the tree with his son Steve’s smiles and identical love of life and has been known to be a jokester too.
Mr. Jerry Padgett was a blessed man with his family and with his multiple businesses for living a wonderful life. There is no doubt he is being rewarded in Heaven for all of his love and kindness shared to others and I am positive he is smiling down on his great family!
I can only imagine the conversation between my Dad and Mr. Jerry because of their friendly and jovial personalities especially their love of being the jokester.
We love the Padgett Family and we encourage you to continue your love of life as your Father and to keep your Faith during the tough times because your father is smiling down and smiling bigger than ever on his family!
We Love you Steve (MAV)

So sorry to hear about Jerry. He was such a great guy, always enjoyable to talk with, and left such a positive mark on so many in the world. Our deepest condolences to Marlene, Steve and everyone in the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Kellie, Steve, Sean and family, We are so very sorry for your loss. Jerry sounds like he lived a tremendous life which is what we all can only hope for. Losing a parent is excruciatingly difficult. We are holding you in our hearts with much love.
Steve, Kellie, Haven and Sean, and the rest of the Padgett family, we are very sorry for your loss. Steve, your dad was a great and kind man. He was always so welcoming and friendly. He certainly rubbed off on you. Prayers and hugs.
If you judge the legacy of a man by the goodness of his sons then Jerry was awesome. I heard so many stories about this man from Steve. Jerry was a guy I wish I could have spent more time with. Steve, Kellie, Haven, and Sean, you are connected by love to Jerry even now. I am sorry for your loss but grateful for the relationships you had.
Matt Opeka had a wonderful and trusting relationship with Jerry Padgett in the early years of PAAC! So did I. Jerry was special and he left Steve behind to continue his great work. We are indebted to Jerry in many ways not the least of which is giving us Steve to carry on the Padgett legacy. Gerry was kind, compassionate and a problem solver. It is nice that he was given Sean, Kelly and Haven in his final years. My heart goes out to the Padgett family.
Love,
Sandy and Richie Weiss
