Larry James Patin, Sr.

  • Thursday, October 24, 1940 - Sunday, February 4, 2018

Larry James Patin, Sr., 77, of Huntingtown, MD passed away February 4, 2018 at Calvert Memorial Hospital. Larry was born October 24, 1940 in New Roads, LA to George A. and Mary A. (Baum) Patin. He was raised in New Roads and Jackson, MS. He received both his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University.
After college, Larry took a job in southern California where he also began a doctoral program. In 1974, Larry accepted a position with the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, MD. He worked at the Bureau in various leadership positions in the Information Technology sector until his retirement in 2001.
In 1983, Larry joined the Bureau’s International Statistical Program Center. In that position he traveled to many African and Middle Eastern countries to assist them with their data collection methodology. In 1995, Larry was selected as the Chief of the Telecommunications Office. He led a team to modernize telecommunication networks within the Bureau and regional offices for the 2000 Census and beyond. During his career, Larry received many commendations, including two Silver Medals.
Larry had a rich life, filled with kids and grandkids, travels, card games, steaks on the grill, summers at the Bethany Beach house, red wine and, of course, his beloved wife Barbara. Larry kept living his life as fully as he could despite his cancer diagnosis in 2010. All of his many friends and large extended family admired the heroic way he coped with his illnesses. The end was on “his terms.” He was able to say goodbye surrounded by close family and friends.
All who knew him were profoundly grateful to have Larry in their lives and will miss him more than they can adequately express. If you were lucky enough to know him, he would be pleased if you would enjoy a glass of red wine in his honor and toast him and his good life.
Larry is survived by his wife Barbara Mooney Walter, son Larry Patin, Jr. and wife Margie of Huntingtown, MD, daughters Wendy Patin of Chesapeake Beach, MD, and Kimberly Sanchez and husband Danny, of Brooklyn, NY, stepdaughters Jennifer Walter and husband Billy Brysacz of Kaneohe, HI and Katie Walter and husband Jason Balut of Charleston, SC. Also surviving are grandchildren Justin and Sydney Patin, James and Michael Patin, Aidan and Devon Sanchez, Violet Walter and Connor Balut, two sisters Carolyn Presley of Pelahatchie, MS and Mary Lewis and husband Pat of Pelahatchie, MS, and a brother, Robert Patin and wife Denise of Milford, IA and numerous nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by a sister Linda Hooks.

Following the Mass at St. Anthony’s Church, family and friends are invited to a buffet reception at 5841 Rockhold Creek Road, Deale, MD 20751 (The Blue Heron Inn).
