On Monday, October 19, 2026, William Calvert Whittington, known to family and friends as Cally, Hoss, and Sam, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Cally was born on December 12, 1940, on the back porch of his family’s home on the tobacco farm at the end of Yellow Bank Road. He worked the farm from a young age until he married his wife, Shirley, in 1964. He then began a career in the printing trade, which eventually led him to the Washington Post, where he worked until his retirement.
Cally enjoyed hunting, golfing, horse races, walks to the river, and time with his grandchildren. He was a fixture at twice-weekly poker games with his friends at the Moose Lodge, kept up monthly luncheons with his high school buddies, and loved vacationing in New England. He was a devoted husband of 62 years and an amazing father, grandfather, and uncle.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daughter, Christine (Ken); his son, J.C. (Jessica); and his grandchildren, Lindsay, Lauryn, Alexis, and Blake, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton and Virginia; his brothers, Charles Arthur (Arky) and Clifton (Boots); and his sister, Beverly.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Thursday, November 12, 2026. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, PO Box 838, Prince Frederick, MD 20678.
