Kathleen Clare Hammond, 80, passed away on October 22, 2026, at The Hermitage at Solomons with her husband of 61 years by her side after a long struggle with dementia.

Kathleen was born on September 21, 1946, to William L. and Gertrude J. Banfield, the third of four children. She graduated from Elizabeth Seton High School in 1964 and married William E. Hammond Jr. (Mike) on October 16, 1965. Mike and Kathleen moved to Calvert County to raise their family, where Kathleen worked as a rural mail carrier for the “Downtown Huntingtown” Post Office. She was an adept crafter throughout her life. Kathleen was a two-time breast cancer survivor and was active in local support groups and fundraising for cancer research. She spent her retirement volunteering for the Calvert County library and hospital, traveling the world with Mike, and enjoying time with friends, family and her grandchildren.

Kathleen is survived by her husband, Mike, her son Bill Hammond, her daughter Susan Hammond Marshall (David), her god-daughter Melanie Waun (Tom), her grandchildren Madison (Tom), Tommy (Aubrey), Gillian, and Dylan, her great-grandson Stetson, and her sister-in-law Nancy Banfield. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings (Bill, Mary Jo, and Terry).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (donate.cancer.org) or the Alzeimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
