It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Susan Marie Howes, 80, of Dunkirk, Maryland, on September 29, 2026.

Susan was born on September 27, 1946, in Washington, DC, to William Edwin Stone and Frances Marie (Dinwiddie) Stone. At an early age, the Stone Family moved to North Beach. Susan loved the Twin Beaches area, where she grew up and established many life long friendships. The eldest of three daughters, she was preceded in death by her parents and her grandson, Jacob.

Susan married Charles Thomas Howes Jr. on October 12, 1968, and they made their home at Riverland Farm in Dunkirk for their entire married life. After graduating from Frederick Sasscer High School in Upper Marlboro, Susan worked for the Prince George’s County Board of Education before staying home to raise her children. She later worked at Calvert Christian School, for Dr. Raja Hawit, and eventually retired as a librarian from the Calvert County Library in 2013.

A devoted mother and active community member, Susan led the United Methodist Women of Smithville Church and shared her passion for scrapbooking as a Creative Memories Consultant.

She is survived by her loving husband, Chuck; her children, Tommy (Heather) of Dunkirk and Carolyn of Chapel Hill, NC; her sisters, Donna Jean Tessier and Beth Stone Benton; and her grandchildren: Christopher, Justin, Shelby, Gabrielle, Leyna, Halle, and Silas. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Huntin’ With Jacob, a foundation established in honor of her late grandson.

October 7 – Obituary: Susan Marie Howes

Susan was in definition the pillar in all aspects of her life: family, church & community.  Her caring & devotion was always displayed in her everyday life – especially with the Smithville Ladies Group.  She caravaned the group to Asbury in Solomons to conduct a mtg so my mom could visit & attend mtg.  We then went to the Lighthouse for a memorable lunch for all.  Rest in Peace Susan.

October 6 – Obituary: Susan Marie Howes

I am so saddened to hear of Susan’s passing. We were class mates at Frederick Sasscer High School in 1964. I attended her Birthday Party last year. She will be greatly missed. My condolences to Chuck and family. May she rest in peace.

October 6 – Obituary: Susan Marie Howes

Susan, Chuck, Donna and I go back to high school. We were best friends and did everything together. Susan was a beautiful lady with a awesome smile who loved to dance, party and always upbeat and happy. In our younger years we played cards every Sunday night and took vacations together. Through out our lives we remained best friends. Susan was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who always put family first. Donna and I will forever miss her beautiful smile, great laugh and hugs.  Chuck, we know Susan was the love of your life and you will be united again. Stay strong.
