Mary G.S. Shiber Shahid

Mary G.S. Shiber Shahid, 92, of Washington, DC, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at the Caribbean Breeze Assisted Living facility in Owings, Maryland after a long illness.

Born in Jerusalem, Palestine, she was the daughter of the late George S. Shiber and Dalal (Dahbour) Shiber. During the Nakba, her father moved the family to Lebanon, where she grew up. She attended the Beirut College for Women (now Beirut University College) in Beirut, Lebanon and went on to become a valued employee at the American University of Beirut Alumni Club, in Beirut and, later, Dumbarton Oaks, in Washington DC.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Irfan A Shahid, and six siblings: brothers Saba, Victor & John and sisters Alice, Hilda, and Nellie. In her last years, she was lovingly looked after by her niece, Dalia Saba Shiber, until her passing. In addition to Dalia, Mary leaves behind three other nieces (Lina Hawwa, Rima Fakhry, Linda Shiber-Crafton) and five nephews (Samir & Bassim Fakhry, George & Ramsey Shiber, Tony-Saba Shiber), as well as many grand nephews and nieces.

Prayer services will be held on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 2:30pm in the Chapel of the Rausch Funeral Home, 8325 Mt. Harmony Lane, Owings, MD 20736, and officiated by Chaplin Terri Palmer. Final funeral services and interment will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 10am on the grounds of The Gate of Heaven Cemetery at 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20906, and officiated by Father Luke from St. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church.
