Sending my sincere Condolences to Jeanie and rest of the family. I’m the one that worked at Giant that would asked about your mom when you did your shopping. Your mother was a wonderful person I would always enjoyed talking to her. I liked the way she would say my name.
Herta was a very special lady. I met Herta back in 1993 while working as a Sergeant with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. She approached me at the shopping center parking lot in front of the Giant grocery store in Prince Frederick. I was handing a minor accident with a school bus and a light pole. She was a curious lady. She approached me asked what had happened in her strong German accent. I answered her with my response to the incident in German and asked her where she came from in Germany. She was very surprised, to say the least, that I spoke German, and recognized that she was German. She then asked me if I could verify and certify that she was still alive. I teased her that she had to be, as we were both having a conversation with each other. Then she laughed and explained that she needed me to sign a government document, as proof of life, to continue to receive her pension for Germany. Of course I arranged a meeting back in the office later that afternoon to handle this matter for her. That completely random meeting started a friendship that lasted nearly 33 years. I later found out she was the grandmother of Dion, whom I also met in a Safeway parking lot back in 1988. From that time forward, I called Herta, “Oma”, meaning grandma, as she took a special place in my heart. I then garnered a friendship with her daughter, Jeanie and relationships with many of her extended German family members when they came to visit in the U.S.
The last few years has been hard on those family and friends who have come to visit Oma, as age and dementia made conversations somewhat limited. It was the long farewell that brought me sadness, to see such a special lady beg me to take her back to her home each time I would visit. I can now take solace in the fact that she is now resting in peace with the love of her life, Henry.
To her daughter, Jeanie and grandson, Dion, you were truly the one’s most blessed to have had Oma in your life the longest. I can honestly say that I feel honored to have had this privilege to share her with you for the short time I had. I will miss her too!
Gott segne dich auf deiner letzten Reise, Oma. Viele liebe, Rick
Dion and Jeanie, We would like to extend our deepest condolences. Herta and Henry were neighbors of my parents and my Aunt Phyllis for a long time. She was a very special lady and friend. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
