Mary M. Krug
July 3, 1942 – November 1, 2024
Mary M. Krug, a resident of the Collington Retirement Community in Mitchellville, Maryland, died on November 1 at the age of 82. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2019.
Mary was born to Robert E. and Elsie (Hatfield) Maddox in Washington, D.C. on July 3, 1942. She was raised in the Anacostia area of Washington and graduated from Anacostia High School. She attended George Washington University on an academic scholarship. It was there that she met Warren Krug, whom she married in 1965. After graduation, Mary began a career in public affairs with various government agencies before landing her “dream job” with the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Public Affairs. One of her fondest memories was going to Andrews Air Force Base early one Sunday morning to meet the first pandas coming to the National Zoo.
After starting a family and moving to Calvert County, Maryland, Mary attended law school at George Washington University. After graduating with honors, Mary started working with Warren’s law firm and practiced there until she was persuaded to run for public office. She was elected to two terms as a county commissioner in Calvert County.
Mary was very active in her community. She served on the Session of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she had been worshiping since 1964. She also served on the Board of Directors of Calvert Memorial Hospital (now Calvert Health Medical Center) for almost 20 years and on the Board of Trustees of the College of Southern Maryland for almost 10 years, serving as Vice Chair and Chair. She was named Volunteer of the Year for 2003 by the United Way for Calvert County.
Mary loved family gatherings and especially looked forward to hosting Easter celebrations, when upwards of 40 family members would be together. She was also famous for her baked goods and holiday parties for friends and neighbors.
In addition to her husband of 59 years, she is survived by her son, Andrew (Jen); her daughter, Hannah (Ashlee); her sister, Jane; and Jane’s daughter, Mandy (Chris).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1313 New York Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005 or The Collington Foundation, Inc., 10450 Lottsford Rd., Mitchellville, MD 20721.

Krug Family,
The memories are flooding my soul! Gerald, Denny, Dick and Mary leading a political party to success. Lunches with she and Chris Holman were times she got to be the official referee! Conversations about Andrew’s “Real Calvert County” or his fix for the world….eliminate TV and Dr. Hannah’s science work; all are visiting with me today. She was so proud of her family. I can still hear her complaining about Maryland’s aging out process for judges.
She’s still and will always be a jewel of a friend. Thank God we had her for what feels like a little while.
Mary (along with Gerald and Dana) was my early political mentor when I made an attempt 20+ years ago to run for county commissioner in Calvert County. She was patient, funny, principled and kind. I am forever grateful for that experience. And as the Reverend Jones so nicely noted, I was fortunate to have spent latter years having regular lunch discussions and debates with him and Mary, great memories I remember fondly.
Warren, Andrew, and Hannah, thank you for sharing Mary with so many of us.
Warmly,
Chris Homan
Our deepest condolences to the entire family. My husband Keith and I were Mary and Warren’s next door neighbors in Ferry Landing Woods community. I fondly remember Mary always having treats for my dog in her pocket to hand out if we were lucky enough to cross paths. She always had a smile on her face and took in the beauty of the trees and flowers on her walks. To this day I make her holiday Egg Nog recipe she gave me about 15 years ago. I think of her every time I make it. We will be holding her in our hearts this Christmas as I pull the recipe from my catalog and read the notes she wrote in the margin. What a beautiful soul Mary was. We were blessed to know her. ~Allie & Keith Lehnhardt
Sending condolences to Warren and family on the loss of Mary. We were neighbors for many years in Ferry Landing Woods and I always looked forward to her baked goods at her holiday gatherings. She was indeed a brilliant and achieved woman. My best to you.
Remembering Mary and her mother Elsie who was especially a treat-to-know member of Huntingtown UMC. We also shared a mutual friend in the Rev. Dr. Jack McClenden. All such good memories of other people in other days gone by. Peace be with you all in your sorrow.

So very sorry, prayers and condolence’s to the family,
So sad to read this. Mrs Krug has been on my mind. I missed her coming to the produce stand and always bringing a treat for my son’s dog Duggy. So kind of her. She was a woman of great compassion and empathy.
