Linda Sue Edwards
November 28, 1945 – February 24, 2024
Linda “Sue” Edwards, 78, of Lusby, Maryland, passed away in her home on February 24,
2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Sue was born on November 28, 1945, in Calvert County, Maryland, to James and Ruby
(Marselas) King. Her childhood was spent in Dunkirk, Maryland forging lifelong bonds with
her sisters Nancy and Patty and their brother Bucky on the farm. After graduating from
Calvert High School in Prince Frederick in 1963, Sue continued dating and then married her
high school sweetheart, James “Skip” Edwards in November of 1969. Their daughter, Mandy
Sue was born in July of 1977.
After high school Sue began her career in the Federal Government which continued until her
retirement in 2014 with over fifty years of service. During this time Sue worked in Washington
DC, Chesapeake Beach, Suitland, and eventually St. Inigoes, at Webster field. Sue highly
valued the relationships she built with her colleagues during this time. Her reputation as a
contract specialist for the Navy is well known in her field. Sue worked on and helped
negotiate multi-million dollar contracts in support of the US Navy and took great pride in that
work.
Though extremely dedicated to and accomplished in her professional life, there was nothing
Sue valued more than spending time with her family and those she loved. Through the years,
she hosted her family’s Easter celebrations, with dinners topping fifty guests. Each weekend
while her parents were living she traveled to Dunkirk from Lusby to visit with her mother and
father. She curled and styled her mother’s hair every Saturday.
Among her most treasured time would be that spent with each of her grandchildren, Ben,
Penny, and Sean, especially after her retirement. Sue traveled many miles to spend time with
each of them as they celebrated birthdays and other accomplishments, played sports and
participated in school and community events. Each holiday brought thoughtful gifts and many
laughs. Beach vacations and trips to Disney World would become foundational memories of
the kid’s childhood. Sue’s grandchildren were the light of her life, and just the sight of them or
the sound of their voice would bring a smile to her face.
Sue is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, James Frederick “Skip” Edwards of Lusby,
Maryland; daughter Mandy Surlis (Aidan) and their children Benjamin, Penelope, and Sean
Surlis, all of Crofton, Maryland; siblings Nancy Tarry Long (Mike), Patty Moore (Joe), and
James “Bucky” King (Helen), her sister-in-law Ann Edwards. and many nieces and nephews.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ruby King, sister Joyce King and her
brothers-in-law Kim Edwards and William Tarry.
A visitation will be held Thursday, April 4th at Rausch Funeral Home in Owings, Maryland
from 2 -4 in the afternoon and 6 -8 in the evening. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be
made in memory of Sue to Hospice of the Chesapeake or to The Michael J. Fox for
Parkinson’s Research.
