Ronald “Ron” Rutherford Geist
July 22, 1936 – October 18, 2023
Ronald “Ron” Rutherford Geist, 87, of Washington D.C passed away on October 18, 2023 in Prince Frederick, MD. Ron is survived by his wife Joan, his daughter Julie, his son Kyle, his brother Dave, his grandson CJ and his granddaughter Mia. Ron was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Julia, and his sister Jean.
After graduating from Bladensburg High School, Ron enlisted in the Navy, where he was assigned to the Submarine Division. After the Navy, Ron started his own business which became a local favorite, Pop’s Crabhouse. After selling the Crabhouse, Ron became the Chief Building Engineer for the Paralyzed Veterans of America from 1982 until his retirement in 2007.
Ron loved the simple things in life. He took great pride in his yard and garden (especially his tomatoes). When he wasn’t working in the garden, he was out on his boat crabbing. He loved being on the water. He also had a talent for playing the guitar and singing, which brought him immense joy and allowed him to share his love for country music with others. Throughout his life, he always had a devoted dog(s) by his side. His trademark, blue eyes and white hair, gave him the distinction of being known as the “Silver Fox”. Whether he was telling a story or we were telling a story about him, it always brought a smile or a laugh.
A viewing to honor Ron’s life will be held on Thursday, October 26th from 11 a.m to 1 p.m at the Rausch Funeral Home, located at 8325 Mt Harmony Ln, Owings, MD 20736. The service will follow at 1 p.m. Friends and family are invited to join in a Celebration of Life immediately following at the Hall at Huntingtown, where they can share cherished memories and stories of Ron’s remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, Ron’s family kindly requests contributions be made to Children’s National Hospital Foundation Attention Gift Administration, 1 Inventa Place 6th Floor West, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Children’s Hospital was a cause close to Ron’s heart.

First to lay eyes on Ron when he was looking to purchase the house in Huntingtown. Those who know us, know the story. When he and Joan moved in, we realized they were a great fit in the neighborhood and became good friends/companions.
Even though we moved away from Quiet Meadows Court, we still feel very close to our family there. We love our QMC family and are extremely saddened by the passing of our beloved friend Ron “aka Big Thunder”.
Halloween just around the corner, kids are going to miss his get up as well as all of the other antics he is best known for… With Ron, what you saw is what you got, very true, very real, and a very very loyal friend and family member.
Hugs to Joan, Kyle, Julie, CJ, Mia (and Rosie). We share your grief and are sorry for your sorrow. Please find comfort in the Love that surrounds you.
Mr. Geist was a regular at the lawn mower shop . He is one on my favorite people . He will always be remembered as truly a nice guy and a gentleman . I send condolences to family and all whom were in his friendship
Requiescat in Pace Mr .Geist you will be greatly missed .
I got to know Ronnie just a few years ago. From the start I was crazy about him. His sense of humor and the way he and Joan welcomed me to their home and family. Joan was my 9th grade English teacher and I’ve never forgotten the wonderful and caring person she was then and she’s so much more now. I love these two wonderful people and will hold every precious memory of Ronnie in my heart forever. My deepest sympathy to Joan, Kyle, Julie, Mia and CJ.
