Timothy William Ortiz
August 24, 1959 – March 23, 2023
Timothy William Ortiz, 63, of Huntingtown, Maryland passed away March 23, 2023 at his home with family by his side, after a 3 year battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He was born August 24, 1959 in Topeka, KS to William Edward and Carmen (Rivera) Ortiz. He was primarily raised in Westway, a neighborhood in Canutillo, TX, where he graduated Salutatorian from Canutillo High School in 1977. Tim married Rosa Nuñez in December of 1984 and they lived in California, Colorado, and New Mexico before moving to Maryland in 1996, eventually making Huntingtown their home in 2002. He started his career at the age of 19 with TRW in White Sands, NM as a Key Punch Operator. It was there that he developed a love for computers and computer science. He went on to have a very successful career working as a Senior Program Manager for Raytheon Technologies for 20 years. During his career he worked for NASA’s EOSDIS Evolution and Development and worked on 2 programs at Goddard Space Flight Center where he led teams that provided solutions for evolving earth science data access challenges. During this time Tim obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland University College in 2010. He later went to work for SAIC as the NASA SENSE Program Manager, retiring in April of 2020. In 2014 the Director of NASA awarded Tim two awards, the NASA Prime Contractor of the Year across all NASA Centers and the NASA Prime Contractor of the Year at Goddard Space Flight Center.
Tim was an active member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church where he served as CCD instructor, lector, and extraordinary minister. He was also an engineering mentor, solar system ambassador for NASA, and a Maryland Master Gardener. In his spare time he enjoyed cooking, grilling, reading, woodworking, crafting, making jewelry, and most recently spending time with his grandson.
Tim is survived by his loving wife Rosa Ortiz, children Carmen Ortiz, Amanda Ortiz, Olivia Ortiz (Tony Lehnen), and Gabriel Ortiz, grandson Anthony Lehnen, and brothers Thomas Ortiz and William Ortiz. He was preceded in death by his parents.
An additional Celebration of Life will be held in El Paso, Texas in August.

Tim was a high school friend that left an impressionable mark on all of us who had the privilege of his company; extremely smart, energetic, compassionate and always a joy to be with. He made us laugh and his sense of humor was unmatched and unforgettable; always a gentleman and always someone you could count. I will never forget my friend and pray that his precious family be covered with God’s grace and love! May we all celebrate this truly wonderful and amazing person!
I send my love to you all: Rose, Carmen, Amanda, Olivia, Gabriel, Anthony and Tony. Tim exemplified how “love for life” should be lived. A master, he was, at everything. If only I could have mastered a portion of what he learned…especially on the BBQ! You ALL are treasures, may you find peace.
So very sorry to hear Tim has left us and his precious family. He loved life, but his family was so special to him, and brought him such joy during these difficult days of illness.
Vic and I will keep Tim as well as you Rosa and your precious family in our prayers. His words of wisdom will be missed at the weekly zoom prayer group meetings.
God bless you Rosa and your lovely family.
Vic and Jeanne Wisniewski

Dearest cousin, what a bright light you were in this world! Full of life & love. Sharing your gifts and talents with everyone you crossed paths with. Excited for all the lessons in life and eager to share what you learned. This world has lost a beautiful soul. You made a huge impression on me, and your kindness & love will never be forgotten. I can’t wait to meet you in Glory, Tim… I will give you the biggest hug!! ❤️ your family is your legacy and they will make you proud. Love and prayers to you Rosa, and children and little grandson who Tim loved so much. God be with you all.
I worked with Tim for quite a long time, and I liked him, his work, and his character. He also was apparently a good cook and he told me a lot about Pizzas, so now I am actually a good Pizza cook, as well. I am sure his family loved him and will miss him very much. I am sorry that he had to leave his family and this world so soon. Richard Meyer.
I became friends with Tim at the Riverdale Maryland Raytheon office. I never worked directly with or for Tim, but what I can tell you is that he was highly respected by his employees, colleagues, and senior leadership. I suspect Tim’s calm demeanor coupled with his respect and care for the people he worked for made a big difference in his career. He really set an example for all of us to follow, and I’m certain he was a positive role model/mentor for hundreds if not thousands of people along his journey. Tim’s family should feel proud of their brother/husband/father/uncle. He was a really good dude and will be sorely missed.
To The Family, I worked with Tim in the Lanham, MD office whenever he did an office visit. He had the best sense of humor and such a calming voice. I pray for peace, comfort and understanding for each of you. Tim is now made whole and is dancing with his ancestors.
Rosa, Carmen, Amanda, Olivia, Gabriel, and the family who Tim loved so much, we are sharing our condolences to you in your loss of one of the best men in the world. We know the family as friends and neighbors, and were lucky enough to get to know Tim. As mentioned to the family, he was always fiesty and full of life – living it and loving it – and always ready with a smile and good mischief. Tim was always a teacher and so patient, whether it be a discussion over food or who had the better process at work! Tim, you are so missed but you live on through your great family.
I had the pleasure of having Tim as a mentor for a small time before he left Raytheon. In the small amount of time I had with Tim as a mentor, he made an impact on me and my overall goals for career growth. He was a very humble and direct person which I personally admired. My deepest condolences to Tim and his family.
I had the honor of working with Tim during my time at Raytheon. Not only was he a warm and generous person that cared very deeply about the people he led, but he consistently lived his core values and did the right thing, even when times were difficult. He was a true renaissance man and leaves behind an impressive legacy that will continue to inspire others to Make This Day Count. I am deeply saddened by his loss and send my thoughts and prayers to his family. He will be missed.
He was a Brilliant gentleman A lot of ♥️ for his wife, Rosa, their kids, & grandson; Generous kindness, educator’s wisdom– I can’t tell it all. It was a privilege & honor to be his caregiver, but not alone, his family were there with me. I will never forget the love from the family & all his friends. Rest well till we meet again. You will be missed.
Tim was the program manager at my first job out of college, and for many years after. He always had an open door and was incredibly supportive and kind to an intern and then new full time employee. When I moved away from the area and telecommuted, I was always sad to miss out when he brought in homemade salsa for the office. I believe he brought the peppers from NM every year, and it was worth it as the salsa was amazing. Tim left an indelible mark on EOSDIS and I am blessed to have had the chance to know and work with him. My condolences and thoughts to the family for their loss.
We are saddened for your loss. We worked with Tim for almost 20 years at Raytheon. I will always remember him as a mentor and a good man, devoted to his co-workers, and above all to family. Tim eagerly shared his pride in his culture, and frequently brought in his homemade salsa for his office mates to sample during Hispanic Heritage month. Tim lived a fulfilling life, and by his example, he enriched the lives of so many others. With deepest condolences, Evelyn Nakamura & Calin Duma

He was a son and a brother at our house from the time he moved to Westway till he graduated. Loved to play board games then take over our couch to nap. But we loved and cared about him. RIP, brother.
