James Edward “Jim” Murphy, Sr.

James Edward “Jim” Murphy, Sr., 67, of Chesapeake Beach passed away December 5, 2022. He was born December 3, 1955 in Washington DC to John Lawrence and Irene (Flaherty) Murphy. Jim grew up in Kensington and Bowie and graduated from Bowie High School. He married Joyce Cornelison on September 7, 1991 and they lived in Bowie before moving to Chesapeake Beach in 2003. Jim worked as an elevator inspector for GSA for many years and retired as the building management specialist at the Ronald Reagan building in 2015. Jim was a member of Jesus the Divine Word Catholic Church and frequently attended Mass at Divine Word and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed motorcycles and riding his Harley Davidson when he was younger, traveling to Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks, and deep sea fishing. Above all else, Jim loved spending time with his large and loving family. Jim was always family first and put others needs before his own. He was a devoted father and full-time grandfather, affectionately known as “Papa Jim.”
Jim is survived by his loving wife Joyce Anne Murphy, children James Murphy, Jr. of Washington, DC and Ryan Murphy of Arlington, VA, stepchildren Martin DeLeonibus and his wife Laura of Bowie and Julie DeLeonibus of Upper Marlboro, grandchildren Dylan, Gabriella, Sofia, Adin, Clayton, Ava, Daniel, and Cassidy, and siblings Irene Keeley, John Murphy, Thomas Murphy, and Kathleen Callendar. He was preceded in death by his parents.
